Hello Luftmensch,

The current state of the health care debate reminds us of everything we need to know about stamping out the distortions and fighting back with the truth before lies take root. The rightwing and their allies have spent weeks and months spreading the most egregious mistruths about the health care reforms of Sen. Kennedy and President Obama, and whipping up anger. Now, you can't turn on your t.v. or radio without hearing repetition and repetition of misinformation, trying to drown out real debate.

We can defeat the big lies and achieve health insurance reform, but it won't be easy now that the mistruths and anger have taken hold.

So I need you to help me start now to make sure we knock down the next big lie - false statements about global climate change - before they frame one of the most important debates we'll ever have in our country. And we need to start NOW fighting against the misinformation that the rightwing is already spreading to try to derail the bill i'm working on with Senator Barbara Boxer and our colleagues; we can't wait until the lies take hold again.

Believe me, I've learned this through hard experience - if you let the lies take hold, it gets harder and harder to root them out. Lies are weeds, choking out our debate, and we need to go after them hard and early to keep them from growing.

In 20 years, we can't look back and think, "If only we'd done a little bit more, this climate disaster could've been averted." We don't have much time, and we have to strike now. It won't be easy - the status quo is always strong - so we all need to do everything we can.

And then, in 20 years, with a new clean energy economy powering unprecedented prosperity of the 21st century, we'll be able to look back on this time and know that we did it, that we fought and won a great victory for all of us.

We've got a lot of work to do, but we can do it.

1. The Right is already attacking John Kerry's email

They are basically saying that as he is addressing the next set of lies, he has given up on healthcare. (Oddly they miss that they are accepting Kerry's defining the right as having lied on that - and ignoring that a simple google shows they are already using a former Inhofe staffer among others to lie about global warming.

Here's the Murdoch owned WSJ, repeating all the finest 2004 era slurs - that he is haughty, French looking (I grew up in a time where French was considered sophisticated and sexy), and derivisely mentioning his real service in Vietnam.

I would assume that Senator Kerry has no problem thinking of two (or even more) things at that same time. In addition, he and Boxer have the responsibility of leading on climate change.

What he is saying is that the Democrats waited too long to defuse RW lies that seem to start in papers at Heritage Foundation, then are repeated by all the RW radio and cable talking heads. After people hear them from muliple sources, they are firmly convinced they are true.

He is entirely right that the right wing is already out there trying to define lies as common wisdom. The fact is Kerry is entirely right, now is the time to challenge those lies before they become well entrenched.

Now, as you are questioning whether Kerry addressing this now, I assume that you should be questioning the RW. Why are they not concentrating their lies on healthcare?

Kerry's analogy on the lies being like weeds is excellent. I have had to try to eradicate well entrenched weeds - it is very hard.

PS I noted the same gleeful nonsense in a WSJ piece which added the usual RW derision of Kerry as French looking and mocking his very real service in Vietnam.

..were to find the cure for cancer, these people would still find a way to attack him and twist his words. :eyes:

I received the e-mail earlier and think it was right on. Their reliance on distortion shows their complete lack of the facts. It's desperation and it can't be allowed to work again, as it so unfortunately has in the past. I think putting the site back up is an excellent idea!

4. Limbaugh always refers to Kerry in this way. This just demonstrates how closely the lies and

their strategy are linked. They may think they have the upper hand, but they are wrong. Republicans ie, politics and power define every move they make, are wrong and will lose this battle because they forget that Democrats actually are the party of the people and will do what is necessary in the end to ensure there will be health care changes that benefit the people of this country.

Doesn't their strategy remind you a bit of how we controlled the Social Security Debate? The difference is, they backed off because they knew what they were pursuing was wrong and they feared the backlash from their constituents. In the case of health care however, most Democrats realize that once the initial rhetoric dies down and new health care programs and laws are enacted, people will be pleased with the results and this will be a huge win for our side. Obama has staked a lot on the outcome and I believe he is one step ahead of the media and the Repubs on this. So, let they gloat now, it will be short lived.

As for Senator Kerry, I think he realized the health care issue is being handled and he has had his say until the time he is needed to vote on it. You know he is a visionary, and he can anticipate what lies ahead for his initiatives on Climate change and global warming, so he is preparing for the onslaught of lies, deceit and scare tactics the RW have been preparing to sling his way.

It must be terrible to be part of a party that only knows how to cheat, scare and lie their way to a win, instead of having any new ideas to put forth.
