3. Actually, the hoax is pretty funny:
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/announcement_of_chamber_shift_on_global_warming_is.php?ref=fpa

J.P. Fielder, a spokesman for the Chamber, confirmed the hoax to TPMmuckraker. He said the Chamber was unaware of who was behind it.

The name Erica Avidus is listed as a contact on the press release. A recording at the number listed for Avidus says "this is Erica Avidus with the Chamber of Commerce." But Fielder said that no one by that name works there. Avidus is Latin for "greedy."

A hoax with a sense of humor. Apparently, Reuters, the WP, the NYT, etc. all fell for it. Heh.

5. The Chamber of Commerce (who have NO sense of humor) wants a criminal probe
into the matter:

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/chamber_wants_criminal_probe_of_yes_men_hoax.php?ref=mblt

"the hoax was perpetrated by the Yes Men, working with Avaaz Action Factory."

I don't see why the police need to bother with this. It is more that news orgs were gullible, and didn't fact check.

Okay, this is funny, or perhaps deadly serious, depending on how you look at it.

Reuters is now admitting that their epic screw-up today — it fell for a hoax press release and ran a story about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce supposedly changing its opposition to climate change legislation — could actually have moved financial markets, an acknowledgment of how serious the error really was.

The NYT & WP picked up the story. Greg ends with this:

Yeesh! As I’m sure virtually every editor and reporter has said today, there but for the grace of God…

6. Since this is make fun of the Chamber of Commerce day, check out
this article in the Wash. Monthly:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_10/020500.php

The WH is not dealing with the CoC as much, and instead is going directly to CEOs about dealing with climate change.
