Kerry got more funding for a new Cape Cod broadband network than any other broadband initiative in
the country. It is projected to create 200 direct and 200 indirect jobs.

Dan Gallagher, president of OpenCape Corp., and Sen. John Kerry deserve most of the credit for securing federal stimulus money to build a new broadband network across southeastern Massachusetts.

Gallagher, who is also chief information officer at Cape Cod Community College, spearheaded the project and kept it moving forward in the face of numerous obstacles.

Kerry, chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, helped direct $32 million to OpenCape, the local nonprofit formed to oversee the system.

The OpenCape system will consist of a wireless network, a regional data center and 350 miles of fiber-optic cable connecting more than 60 anchor institutions.

1. Such an achievement for MA!!!
It's become a game now, I'm trying to figure out what the ass#$%@ commenters at the Herald or Globe would say about this -- the ones who say he never does anything for the state. I imagine they'd either ignore it or say he only did it because he vacations on the Cape. That is if the Herald or Globe even deigned to cover it!

But it is a remarkable move forward for the MA economy.

2. Now, if Scott Brown's name was on it too - it would have had plenty of coverage
in the Herald, that probably wouldn't notice which Senator chairs the Communications subcommittee of the Commerce Committee, that this likely came out of.
