A Couple of Victories in the Senate Today w/ Kerry News!
Okay, very busy day today in the Senate... and we actually won a couple! The news is twittering about the Smithc -Bingaman amendment that appears to be slap in Bush's face by 7 Repub's including the one who co-sponsored the bill...

A Couple of Victories in the Senate Today

We are fighting an uphill battle in the Senate, but with a little faith and some hope, we can always look to find something to light up the darkness. We had a few of those lights shine today in the Senate that we should take a moment to be thankful for.

The Smith-Bingaman Amendment passed today by a narrow margin, but it’s heartening to see some bipartisanship in a stacked leadership. The Smith-Bingaman Amendment strikes Bush’s proposal to cut $15 billion from Medicaid funding. The Smith-Bingaman Amendment was co-sponsored by John Kerry. In a statement today about the amendment, John Kerry said, “We won an important victory today for Americans who need a voice in Washington. In a bipartisan vote, the Senate stuck up for the poor children, pregnant women, seniors and people with disabilities who are served by Medicaid.”

AP News reported that “The Senate delivered a slap at President Bush and its own Republican leaders Thursday by voting to erase his plans for cutting Medicaid, community development, school aid and other parts of next year's $2.6 trillion budget.” On NPR a while ago I heard that the passing of this bill definitely puts a damper on Bush’s plans for having it his way.

1. We should be very happy about this
None of these things should be taken for granted. I am very proud of the Dem Seantors who stood up and did the right thing and I am pleased with the Repub Senators who voted to act with genuine compassion and concern for the poor and those in need of a little help.

I agree with you KerryGoddess. We need to spread good news and tell people that it is not hopeless and that the darkness can be lifted. * is not the king and there are people who are fighting hard to make sure he doesn't destroy America's social infrastructure.

Thanks for posting this!

4. Gordon Smith from Oregon
A Republican that actually didn't bow down to Bush. Stunned and amazed I am. I noticed all the OR/WA people also didn't vote for ANWR. Amazing, they actually seem to know we care about the environment. Lost of older people in Smith's part of the state-I'm still stunned he didn't sell them out for Chimp loyalty. Wonders never cease. Must have a little real Oregonian in him even if he is a Republican!

7. Ack, he does that to win
He always falls in line in the end, and if they'd needed him on that ANWR vote, he may well have folded there too. He can come home and boast about his Medicaid Amendment, even if the House takes it out later.

We have to run against this guy in 2006, he's just been given two great gifts to run on.

He's not in any way a moderate maverick, AT ALL.

He doesn't run like a right wing loon, but then he couldn't win if he did. He does just enough of this stuff to make it really hard to fight against him.

6. Yes and it could make the lost ANWR vote irrelevant if the House
and Senate can't agree to a Budget for the third year in a row.

10. I don't even know if he was in town
I'm not even sure they had a quarum, truthfully, after reading the main board.

Plus, I think they voted behind closed doors. I hope we can get more details. I think there were alot of Dems out of town.

12. The Senate didn't really do anything
This was handled via backdoor channels. (Probably lots of phonecalls and such that basically said, if the Rethugs want this so bad, go ahead.)

There was no formal roll call vote. It was done by unanimous consent. And I think it will backfire on the Rethugs.

11. Wow - I needed some good news today
That's great. Keep fighting, John - we're right there with you! I was beginning to despair for the "voiceless" disadvantaged, poor, disabled, etc. folks in America.
