Kerry and Kennedy to Attend Pope's Funeral
Kerry and Kennedy to Attend Pope's Funeral
5 April 2005

AP News is reporting that Senators Kerry and Kennedy have been invited to be part of a congressional delegation attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II.

(Washington - AP) —

Massachusetts Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry have been invited to be part of a congressional delegation traveling to Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul.

Kennedy met privately with the pontiff during a visit to Rome in the 1980s. He recalls presenting the pope with a bust of his brother, President John Kennedy.

The small group of senators attending the funeral will also include Democrat Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, who in 1983 delivered a message to the pope from Polish solidarity leader Lach Welesa.

1. They belong there
If anyone should be there representing this country, it should be Kennedy and Kerry. They will bring a sense of class that maybe, just maybe will overshadow the ignorance of the schrub. I was dreading the embarrassment he would once again bring to this country with his presence.

2. And Durbin and other Dems
but not Santorum. And I really, really like Sen. Durbin. (Not trying to be too Mass specific.)

3. I caught him this morning on Cspan2
He gave a nice tribute to the Pope on the Senate floor. Yeah he's a good guy--good speaker, too.

4. I'm glad they're going, too.
We need some folks to balance out the Bush crew so that people can see that some Americans do, in fact, have brains. I'm sure it's also especially important to Kerry and Kennedy, since they're both Catholic.
