Great live-blog comment thread
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 05:22 PM by whometense
on yesterday's Bolton hearing here:
http://www.haloscan.com/comments.php?user=atrios&comment=111393733962810468
and
Some trolls there, but mostly great commentary.

Favorite comment so far:

Sen. Allen is certainly a patronising son of a bitch, isn't he?

    And death-defyingly, brain-eatingly, fart-inducingly stupid, too.
    Hecate

2. Ah, that was wonderful!
I read that yesterday too. Thanks so much for posting it here!

My favorite comment is Athenae's summary of the proceedings (I think she's one of us too ):

Biden: Kicked Bolton's ass.
Dodd: Kicked Bolton's ass.
Kerry: Put on some sexy glasses, and kicked Bolton's ass.
Voinovich: Boy, this Bolton chap sounds like a douche.
Chaffee: Maybe we shouldn't vote.
Lugar: Fuck all y'all, we're voting.

That's where we are now.

A.

3. Spring is in the Air
and the LLL's are out in force. There were an amazing number of comments yesterday, across many boards, on how good Sen. Kerry looked. (And yes, the glasses were very sexy. But then again, he was kicking ass in committee. He could have shot kool-aid out of his nose and I would have though he was sexy. Brainy, forceful guys who just kick Rethug ass just get me. It's a wonk thing.)

19. This one was good
Sweet mercy, he just put on his glasses to better see the ass he's trying to kick.

"He didn't tell you the truth."

8. Do you like Kerry because you're a wonk?
I'm confused. You haven't made yourself very clear on the subject.

Don't mind me, I'm just snarking.

11. Well, it is nice to have
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 07:40 PM by TayTay
a good-looking man upholding the honor of wonky people everywhere. I like him because of the high wonk factor but also because of all his other sterling attributes.

And because, in my heart of hearts, I love the All-American virtues of upholding truth, justice, fair play and integrity. I am, at my core, the most virtuous and sincere of people. So, naturally, I am fatally attracted to people who do the same. There is, at John Kerry's core, a refreshing lack of cynicism and a real desire to do good that I am just unable to resist. I want that in a pol, real bad.

12. I'm more a fan of his integrity and heart I suppose
I'm not really into "wonk." Obviously, I like learning, but I have more of a "big picture" perspective - details don't appeal to me all too much. John Kerry is like the ultimate knight in shining armor to me - his virtue, integrity, honor, and nobility are unsurpassed. He's like the realization of a mythic hero, for me, and I think that's the basis for his immense appeal to me. He's like my very own Aragorn.

13. I listened to the SBA hearing today
I found it very interesting. There was a dandy confrontation between Sen. Kerry and the Sec of Labor and that woman held her ground. It was a nice situation. (I will get the transcript and go over it. I was late due to a medical appointment. Yes, Ms. Edwards, I made it. Just for you sweetie.)

The second part of the hearing was more about how Small Businesses are suffering because Health Care is just too expensive for them to offer to their employees. I loved this part. There were statistics and everything. (I want those. They are critical to a good discussion of the overall problem of Health Care in America. I want to tie them in with the stuff Kerry said about Health Care for kids in the Finance Comm meeting and his other remarks this year on KidsFirst.)

Ahm, given the above, I think I qualify as liking the wonk. Born that way, I guess.

14. Um, okay

That would drain any sort of sexy feeling I had right out of me, but whatever works, I guess. I don't want statistics to be anywhere in my head when I'm thinking about John *that way*.

I don't get it. That's part of the appeal.

To each their own. There is, after all, plenty to go around so we are all happy.

23. Head clearing laughter
Oh sweetie, I find the wonky parts attractive. (Can't explain why, just do. I love smart guys.) I believe this is of lesser appeal to you.

I regard you and say, "How can you not?" You regard me and say, "How can you?" Laugh, laugh, laugh! This is why there are so many flavors of ice cream in the world We all have different tastes. Not better or worse, just different.

There is just no comprehending other people's particular slice of human nature. I know that I deeply like yours because it fills in all the spots that I miss. (Sometimes I get so lost in the details I forget the big picture.) And I know you regard me with (laughing) curiosity. This is what makes this group so interesting!

24. Oh, I like *intelligence*
Obviously, or else I'd be a Repube. But I have met too many dry, humorless intellectuals to find that by itself all too appealing. That's why John's passion and integrity is what does it for me. He's like my own white knight, who is also incredibly hot.

25. After today, I concur utterly
Sometimes it's good to not be wonky. Sometimes it's good to say what the hell is on your mind, just flat out say it. And it is hot as hell.

Have you ever seen her blog? first-draft.com

Before the election she had a whole series of Happy Kerry Photo threads that were wonderful. That summary was great! (I'm also a huge fan of her Friday ferretblogging).

17. I know what you mean.
I was listening to Ed Schultz on the radio this afternoon and he was talking about yesterday's hearing. He said he thought Kerry was going to have a flashback and lunge across the table for Lugar's throat. I'd have paid real money to see that. But Lugar looked scared enough without it.

He's a VN vet, too! And he actually stood up for Max Cleland when they were smearing him. So he's not all bad.

he did nothing when they went after Kerry because he didn't want them to use it against him in the Republican Primary when/if he runs.

21. E-mail sent
He is one of my Senators, and I just sent a real sweet e-mail to him. I told him he should be ashamed of his actions in these hearings, and yes I did mention the stupid sexual comments he had , and told him how ridiculous that was. Told him he should start using his mind instead of the Republican rubberstamp. Ended with telling him that he is playing with the lives of we the people, and that we the people are watching his every move.

Of course signed it FedUp. Can't wait to hear back, because I am ready to rumble.
