Has everybody seen this - Unbelievable!!! Dem's expelled from Church
East Waynesville Baptist Church in NC expels all Dem members

My Mom just emailed me the news. There's no link yet.

She said WLOS tv just broke in to report that the East Waynesville Baptist church has officially excommunicated all its democratic members.

She said that before the election, the preacher told the congregation from the pulpit that if they didn't vote for * they had to come to the altar to confess their sins and repent. they could'nt be members. (My Mom doesn't attend that church--she's United Methodist, but I know of lots who do attend).

From Mom's email: "One of the local women who got excommunicated said on TV that it was like a cult. Another man who got excommunicated said that the rest of the congregation stood up and applauded as the Democrats were told to leave."

Okay, I'm officially freaked out.

It has been confirmed further down in the thread although there isn't an article to link to yet.

2. Someone send this to the IRS
They are officially a PAC. They are NOT tax-exempt any longer, and they need to abide by the tax code for all other 527s.

5. Absolutely
These churches have got to be held accountable for their actions.

The thing is, these crooks are not going to be in power forever. A day of reckoning will come. I believe it will come sooner rather than later.

3. Secret ballot - How do they know?
I doubt you'd want to stay in such a church but this sounds really suspicious.

19. Thought crime
I have no idea. I didn't know my church was mostly Dem until I wore my button to church and got more "good guy" thumbs up than I did "I don't know about him" thumbs down.

6. This is UnAmerican to the core!
The over-reaching is starting to pile up. First the Schiavo thing which as extremely unpopular. Then the Rethug attempts to hijack the death of then Pope. Now this.

Just wait. The backlash is coming.

7. This story needs to be front-and-center on MSM for 2 weeks.
To show the rest of the country and the world how hateful and divisive the far-right xtians really are.

This is disgusting.

Can we overturn Lincoln's work and allow 'red' precincts to secede?

8. The Rethugs can't talk their way out of this one
Edited on Fri May-06-05 07:20 AM by TayTay
They are the Party of the insane. This action is beyond the pale. Democrats need to be shouting this at every chance.

What the insane-o's in the Rethug party want is to turn America into a thoecracy. The rest of the country has to see this and spurn it completely. And I think they will.

We will not become the Fascist States of America because some wingnuts believe that their distorted view of both democracy and Christiantity is the on;y proper one. This issue will resonate badly for the 'pukes. This is Terry Schiavo, Part II.

Thomas Jefferson on religious Witch Hunts. (1800)

"The returning good sense of our country threatens abortion to their hopes, & they believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: & enough too in their opinion, & this is the cause of their printing lying pamphlets against me. . ."

10. Keith Olbermann is going to cover this tonight.
I just got his email:

"Yesterday, on the National Day of Prayer, we learned that the East Waynesville Baptist Church in North Carolina essentially kicked out its Democratic members. Nine members were "excommunicated" and 40 other members of the 405 member church resigned in protest." (Daily KOS http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/6/84353/67437

Booting the anti-Bush heathens

A North Carolina pastor has given his faith-based community a Republican makeover. From ABC news affiliate WLOS:

"East Waynesville Baptist asked nine members to leave. Now 40 more have left the church in protest. Former members say Pastor Chan Chandler gave them the ultimatum, saying if they didn't support George Bush, they should resign or repent."

The minister declined an interview with the station, but did clarify, apparently, that "the actions were not politically motivated."

14. The actions were not politically motivated?
How in Gawd's name can it not be political? What, they kicked out all the Zoroastrians first, then came for the Druids and then decided, well, let's kick out the Democrats?

This is a bold-faced lie. The American Taliban is overreaching. These people are dangerous ideologues who are trying to trigger religious wars in the US. To hell with them. (Well, if I believed in hell I would say that. Perhaps they should sit and reconsider their conformist attitudes and think about being more accommodating in their views and welcoming in their political outreach. Diversity is America's strength, not a weakness. Okay, that was my polite Lib side. The rest of me is telling them to F*ck off, you fascist Nazi cows.)

is talking about this right now. He's going to interview one of the women who was forced out of her church - sometime between 3 and 6 pm.

It was good. He interviewed this sweet 78-year-old lady who'd belonged to the church for 30 years. The pastor's been there 2 1/2. She said she thinks he's trying to rid the congregation of its old Democrats, and replace them with young people who are willing to sign on 100% to the party line.

It was hard to tell how liberal she is. She's been a dem forever, but said she votes for "whoever I think is best for the job." Ed didn't ask her who she voted for last fall.

I'd say she was a great witness.

Edited to add: they just mentioned her again. Her name is Selma Morris.
