    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

    Be Fair to Kerry

    May 16, 2004
    To the Editor:

I just read Paul Schindler’s column on John Kerry, which falsely claims that he “threw crumbs to the crowd” by bashing gay marriage in front of a crowd in Louisiana. (“John Kerry Should End Campaign,” May 12-18.) In fact, Kerry didn’t mention gay marriage in his speech in Louisiana. He answered a direct question from the Boston Globe (over the phone, I assume) while he happened to be in Louisiana.

To play this up into some kind of anti-gay stump speech is a severe distortion. I understand that you disagree with the man, but I think that if you have any concern for journalistic accuracy, you’ll want to correct this huge misrepresentation of what happened.

2. Good for her! Sounds like the truth to me...
Kerry more likely to say nothing about this issue and talk about more important issues. Never would he spew anti-gay stuff. Just some paper wanting to divide the Dem party.

3. Note:
Not only some paper, it was in fact his own hometown paper, trying as usual to stir up trouble for him.

4. That analysis was so shallow
I was surprised the Globe printed it. The reasoning was faulty and the idea that Kerry was trying to warp into an outsider was undeveloped and not well-reasoned. I found it subpar. (That was the easy analysis that fit the known paradigms of 'insider' and 'outsider' that are so shopworn and cliched.)

Kerry and the Dems are reaching for another idea all together. The Globe just doesn't see it. They are tied in to the present system and can't see the forest cause the trees keep getting in the way.

5. I agree.
I think it was incredibly cheap of them to set him up like that. Maybe it was out of ignorance (best possible spin) but all I saw was a cheap gotcha.
