IT's sad that no one in GD is paying attention. Reid is really telling the Bush Admin off. He is t-h-i-s close to espousing what KErry said last week. T-h-i-s close.

Yes, he's calling for an investigation of WHIG, of how we got to war, of attacking Wilson. (C'mon Harry ask about the DSM, please!) He is now criticizing the Senate Select Comm on Intelligence. Yes, yes, yes. Every Dem must say this. Yes!

NOTE: That must have been one hell of a Tuesday Dem Senate lunch caucus. Wow!

25. If it is a floor speech, it should be in the Congressional Record.
...which is available on Thomas (thomas.loc.gov) within 1-2 days.

In theory, every word spoken on the Senate or House floors goes into the C.R.

I'm not sure when they insert remarks "as prepared" vs. "as delivered" though.

11. Harry Reid demanded that the Senate go into closed session
(Okay, who put something into the water at that Senate Dem caucus luncheon. C'mon fess up, especially you tall Senators.)

The Senate Select Committee on Intel is the most secretive on the Hill. They get national security issues and very sensitive info to review. Harry Reid is demanding that the Senate discuss this, in a closed session that will have no one but Senators there to discuss this stuff.

Now, remember, Bush unilaterally changed the ability of individual Senators to get security briefings. He cut them off from most of the select info becuase 'Senate offices leak.' (Irony anyone.)

I love Rockefeller. He has specifically asked for part 2 of the investigations on what the hell went wrong in the build-up to the war. Now Rocky, please, please, please sign Kerry's DSM letter. Now!

58. I see JK fingerprints in this
For one thing, his Iraq speech last week cleared a way for Dems to talk about the war without having to be thrown back constantly by the IWR. I can see him encouraging them to strike hard now. Reid of course is no slouch when it comes to having backbone, anyway. But there is a tone of moral outrage that seems familiar.

I actually got tears in my eyes thinking about our brave warriors stepping up to fight against this corrupt government on behalf of their country.

63. The speech Reid made was both personal
esp. when he mentioned his grandchildren and full of talking points from last year and this year employed by other Dems. (Esp. Sen. Kerry.)

I think this was a joint recommendation of the Democratic Senatorial Caucus. And I still would have loved to have been a 'fly on the wall' in that luncheon today. Who spiked the punch at the Dem Caucus today indeed.

65. and the timing was great
Bushco hoped to turn over a new leaf this week and move on from Libby. Well, the Dems had other plans. This hit the talk shows tonight--nothing they like better than a good fight. And Joe Wilson for a half hour on Larry King, even--and he was great too.

Oh and I want to mention Sen. Durbin. He was as good as Reid. Everyone was so united and resolute. And they're not done by a long shot.

I'm reading this thread and all I know is that the Dems are saying stuff to get the Republicans in an uproar and I'm all for that, but can someone give me a quick run down about what this is all about. What is a closed session, how is a closed session different than normal and what are the Dems upset about and wanting to get right now. Anyway, just need a quick rundown, I'd really appreciate it, I hope I didn't annoy anybody coming in uninformed and wanting to be filled in, I just don't have time to read a bunch of topics about it right now, have to get back to work. Thanks.

60. Hi, pinkflower21
Maybe this will help clarify what's been going on:

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/RS20145.pdf

(snip)

“Secret,” or “closed,” sessions of the House and Senate exclude the press and the public. These sessions are used for Senate deliberations during impeachment trials, as well as to discuss issues of national security, confidential information, and sensitive communications received from the President. During a secret session, the doors of the chamber are closed, and the chamber and its galleries are cleared of all individuals except Members and those officers and employees specified in the rules or essential to the session. Secret sessions occur infrequently and have been held more often in the Senate than the House. Any Member of Congress may request a secret session.

(End)

Senate Emerges From Closed Session on Iraq
AP - 1 hour, 46 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that President Bush used in the run-up to the war in Iraq and accusing Republicans of ignoring the issue. "They have repeatedly chosen to protect the Republican administration rather than get to the bottom of what happened and why," Democratic leader Harry Reid said.

(End)

pinkflower, in a nutshell, the Democrats are accusing Republicans of dragging their feet about starting Phase II of the investigation to examine Bushco's distorting Intelligence to fit their longtime plan to wage war on Iraq. The Democrats are demanding that Phase II start PRONTO, or they will force closed-door sessions on the issue until they comply.

SOCK IT TO 'EM, DEMOCRATS ! *whistle*clap*whistle*

I just wanted to see the date and who signed and what was said. I believe Kerry was the first to address this issue about getting Phase 2 started and he had good reason, DSM is just another point to bring up. He was right and the Dems on the Intelligence Committee should have listened. Corzine I believe was the only one who signed that was on the Intelligence Com.

57. Since I missed this wonderful conversation earlier,
I have to say now that I have never been more proud of being a Democrat than I am today! I was super busy at work today, but this afternoon something told me to check into DU, and I did just as all hell was starting to break loose! Instead of being melancholy tomorrow because of the election anniversary, I'll be happy in the knowledge that the Democrats in the Senate are doing everything in their power to fight for the American people!

59. I'm proud, too
And so grateful that we have valiant Dems willing to fight so hard for the good of the country. It's got to be terribly hard. Brilliant move by Reid and the Dems today!
:applause:

66. Did anyone else think this about the Reid thing...
You know, it totally strikes me that Harry got JK's back today - on his Iraq speech. JK demanded accountability, but ultimately it had to come from Reid as the Minority leader...

67. just good that it was done
It was weird though hearing Matthews still insisting top Dems were still for their IWR vote (including Kerry). He has to know better - but I emailed the paragraphs in the speech to Hardball. Maybe if he gets enough copies he'll read it.

68. Yes, I did. A lot of the language that Sen. Reid used
could have be lifted intact from a JK speech. The reasoning behind it was pure Kerry. (Really, I could go through it with the proverbial 'fine-toothed comb' but trust me, there was a lot of Sen. Kerry up there when Sen. Reid was speaking. A lot!
