I had this dream not long after the Inauguration, and I think it was my subconscious mind trying to reassure me.
I dreamed I was watching a brief documentary that featured George Bush. Fortunately, I didn't have to look at him; they just had his voice making comments as they showed relevant footage. The connection between his comments and the footage was deliciously ironic. It was right before his inauguration, but in my dream, there was another ceremony first in which Kerry had to formally give up his claim to the presidency. Kind of like conceding, but this was a whole concession ceremony that had to happen before Bush could be inaugurated. They were showing the preparations for that ceremony, and as they were hoisting up a giant flag, you could hear Bush on voiceover saying smugly, "Yes, I think that in recent years, there *has* been more attention paid to my opponents after the election, and I'd like to think that I have something to do with that." God only knows what he meant, but I was practically cracking up, thinking yeah, the reason people pay more attention to the election losers *does* have something to do with Bush, and with buyer's remorse. But he seemed to think it reflected well on him.
Then Bush was saying, "You know, I know some things about how this kind of thing should be done. In Belarus, they really have it down. For example, you have to hoist the flag up high, because if you put it within reach, people will just try to grab onto it." Just then they showed a close-up of the flag, and I really wished I could grab the corner of it, even though I was watching on TV. I felt that if I could just touch the corner of it, somehow I could make *it* -- the flag -- feel better. Then Bush said, "So that's all that's left to do: the resignation of John Kerry." And just then the camera did an extreme close-up on the flag so that it just filled the screen and then froze, and you could see that the flag was upside down. I knew somehow that they were going to turn it right side up, that this had something to do with the kind of block-and-tackle that they were using to get this huge flag raised up, but the camera just froze on the image of the upside-down flag and held it while Bush was talking.
When I woke up, I was almost cracking up, because it was very clear to me that the camera guys for that documentary were on our side -- they had timed the visual images perfectly to undercut what Bush was saying. It felt as if Bush *thought* he was in control, but not only was the documentary maker on our side, but also Bush couldn't completely take control until he got Kerry to resign. And somehow I felt that even though JK would go through this ceremony, it wouldn't be the end of it; on some level, he was never going to give up, and so I woke up feeling a lot better.
