Business attire?! To celebrate the birth of such a GOD? Booor-ing!
So yeah - I emailed the event coordinator of the Kerry birthday bash and inquired about the "dress code" so to speak. He told me "business attire."

WHAT?!

What about my dream of a classic, black, fabulous, Audrey Hepburn worthy, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" opening scene-style evening gown? The Senator deserves no less, and oh, can I rock a gown like that.

Business attire? We aren't going to the office! But a celebration of the birth of the sexiest man alive.

Fine for the office, or airplane:

Hellooooo, Senator:

I don't want to dress like a secretary for such an splendid event. Who wants to overdress with me? :-)

There is NO WAY you are passing out and no way you'll be in a pool of your own urine.

I say...given your haikus and all...that you should wear your finest set a pearls, a perfect pedicure, and your birthday suit!

(I hope I'm not offending you by posting this.)

TayTay and I were within several feet of him and there were no deleterious affects whatsoever. He's really just a very nice person and quite ordinary in a way. If you get to meet him and shake his hand, I'm sure the Senator will be very gracious, and should you not be able to control your enthusiasm, he will undoubtedly avoid staring at the puddle beneath your feet!

8. Cocktail Dress...
I attended a few "big" money fundraisers here in L.A. during the primaries including a very Hollywood event for JK's Birthday at Sherry Lansing's house. Carole King performed - no one overdressed. Suits, a few dresses -- business or cocktail.

In Boston people do tend to be a bit more formal than L.A.

If I could go (and I have racked my brains wondering if I could make it) I would personally wear a nice little black cocktail dress.

It sounds like you are all going to have a blast!

fundraiser with Barak Obama. Many people dress for these things. If you can't dress up for meeting JK, what IS worth dressing for????I have always worn a cocktail dress or outfit to these occasions. It is perfectly appropriate. You go girl. Business attire just means no tux for the guys. A dark suit will do for them.

11. Well, I am officially your opposite.
In terms of dressing. I hate getting dressed up. I think the world would be a fine place if everyone wore sweatshirts and jeans all the time. (With the known caveat that some people look much better in jeans than others.)

I am one of those efficient dressers. (God, I miss Geranimals. Why didn't they ever make these for adults?) I basically buy stuff that just more or less looks good together and line them up in my closet. I start at the beginning, wear stuff down to the end and then start over. I find it to be more efficient. (See, who talks like that? Sigh!) I never have to worry about spending time thinking about clothes, which is not something I can ever get my mind around. (My sister can though. She once spent 2 days telling me how dull I am and that I should invest in more interesting clothes. I meant to, but I got stuck at the bookstore and never made it to the clothes store. Sigh! If you ever want to find me, just look for the person who looks like an unmade bed, and start talking. It's me.)

I was at a fundraiser a month ago and I'll wear the same thing I wore then. (Pants, no way I wear dresses in Boston in Dec. It's too friggin cold.) I can officially be the old, stuffy Aunt of the group. (Well, we need one.)

12. I'm with you Tay Tay!
I live in a world where if you wear shoes to work (not flip-flops) it's considered dressing up. I have the exact same attitude about clothes that you do, although apparently I'm not quite as "efficient" as you are. If it's clean, it's available to be worn. (In a pinch the things on the bottom of the dirty clothes pile can magically be considered clean, with proper ironing of course.)

Now, of course if I had the body of a hot 20-something year-old, I might consider a little black dress. Unfortunetly I don't.

14. Add me to this club
Most of the time, if the clothes are clean and don't clash horribly, I will wear them. Dresses and skirts are something I wear to weddings, funerals and job interviews. I will come up with something that's suitable for a winter party in a fine Boston hotel. Maybe even a little glittery, since it will also be the holiday season. And the little black cocktail dress won't cut it for me, since I am a plus-size gal. So looking like a sex goddess just ain't gonna happen.

You sound like my attitude about clothes! Except I am hard to fit (different size top and bottom, so that leaves out a LOT of stuff at Kohl's, you know, then there's the short legs, long back - relatively - and short arms. Sigh.) So I have to plan what to put together every week to look different from the week before as much as possible. Because I get stuck in the bookstore on the way to the clothing store too.

So anyway, I'm thinking a blue tweed blazer with navy slacks and a dressy blouse. Kind of office-geeky maybe, but then geeky is pretty much who I am, and it's comfortable.

What do you think?

18. I have black slacks, black sweater and a jazzy jacket.
It'll do. (And maybe some boots. Nice boots. Cuz my LL Bean specials just won't do. Damn. Those things last forever and are warm as hell.) I can't wear heels because I am extremely flat-footed and would wind up unable to walk for a few days after heels, so maybe a decent pair of boots will help.

On the other hand, I do want to look better than the last time I saw Mr. Kerry. I don't want him to think, gee I wonder what happened to her blueberry outfit? That wouldn't be good.

I am a big advocate of going in whatever dress you want. If Vek or WEL or anyone else wants to be dressed up, then dammit, I hope they dress up. (Goodness, they are coming from really far away. I say go for it ladies. Dress the way you want. You will shine.)

I think we will be a hard-to-quantify group. Just as we are a, ahm, hard-to-quantify group. It should be a blast.

What was the implication? I thought I was being very vanilla.

I want to go for the "classic beauty" look. Like Audrey. I need just the right dress. Kinda sexy, but totally classy and a bit elegant. I don't like to dress up a lot, all the time, but for this....hell yes.

Something in this vein:

Otherwise, I am a jeans and flip-flops girl. BUT NOT FOR THIS.

25. Ah, ladies...I'm not going but I just have to jump in on a fashion thread
I'm not going to this and if I were, given my worship at the altar of chocolate as of late, would probably have to visit Omar for something in ah,...camouflage canvas. However, a year or so ago, I might have gone with one of these options.

A red, tailored suit with a lace camisole and red high heels is one way of upgrading business attire. Recommended only if you have the figure to carry it off: slim but shapely.

Another option is to wear something long and feminine. Not an evening gown, but a nice dress, preferable in a solid color and a soft, flowing fabric. Something a little medieval or neo-hippy works nicely, again, if you can carry it off. Something you could wear to the office or out to dinner.

About the basic black dress: this is the staple of every woman I know. Unless you are Audrey Hepburn, this will not set you apart. I'm a firm believer in color. Monochromatic color. Head to toe purple or green is far more devastating than basic black, unless you happen to be Elvira.

I'm sure everyone will look very lovely! Take pictures.

26. I'm not Audrey - but I have my own thing...
and I'm certain I can pull it off, and no doubt I can lend whole new meaning to the "little black dress." What I wear may be black, but will by no means be "typical."

I too am a firm believer in color. In fact, my favorite color is bright orange. But I will definitely rock the stunning elegant black number for the party.

It's never failed me before. ;-)

And. Why aren't you going?!?!

You guys are coming from far away for this event. Dress however you want. You have earned it. I think you will all sparkle and look phenomenal, wonderful and happy!

I can't wait to see all the range of people that come. It should be great! There is more than enough room for a range of people dressing however the hell they want to dress.

Everybody's plans sound awesome! IMHO, go for it and be yourselves. That should be more than wonderful!
