Curious question about last night...
I do know that JK talked during the event last night about the PAC and what not. Does anyone who was there know what was said. Did he talk about the PAC? How much money the PAC has raised? Cadidates he's supporting... you know anything political that would be good for supporters to know.

1. I think he actually did say something
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 03:15 AM by Vektor
during a speech to the crowd about that, but I cannot accurately remember any dollar amount...

Maybe someone else can clarify?

2. Well I can actually
Because one of the original Kerry Bloggers was there last night and although she was left out of the "strategy session" she was able to let bloggers on the Dem Daily know a bit about the actual political stuff that went on.

It was generous, and did get a hearty round of applause.

4. I think he said about $5.3 mill has been raised so far by the PAC
And they've been able to help around 80 candidates so far. I'm not sure how much was raised from Sunday's event. They also said that the email fundraising appeals have been pretty successful.

5. I am sorry to hear that.
We must have set up 5 or 6 threads that were asking people if they were going to be at the Boston event. We contacted everyone who responded to those threads via PM, all while still remaining true to the wishes of THK that our special event in Boston remain a secret.

This was a hectic time and even the best of intentions and outreach sometimes fall through. We did the best we could.

6. Very true Tay Tay
and in all honesty, the involvement with THK didn't come about until a few weeks ago (if I'm remembering correctly). We'd been talking about the trip itself for a few months, and wanted to include as many Kerrycrats as possible.

7. Not all Kerry Bloggers come to DU
It's my understanding that contact was made with DU'ers that night and no one was very welcoming to a long time Kerry blogger. I'm glad everyone enjoyed however.

11. I guess this is true!
I also understand that you can't always get a second chance to make a good first impression. However, it is also true that we were meeting people after the event in a pure haze and were not even conscious of our own names at that point. We were dazed. We had no idea that we were going to be called up on a stage in front of a raucous crowd and allowed to stand behind and to the side of John Kerry as he gave a short speech. We had no idea that we would be so near the lovely and warm and incredible THK. It was, for some us, a rather singular and overwhelming event.

After the principles left and we had a chance to remove our collective jaws from the floor, we attempted to communicate using recognizable human vocal patterns, with relative degrees of success. At this, alas, we may have somewhat failed. As yet another caring and supportive JK person, you will, no doubt, explain the extraordinary specialness of this occasion and our deepest regrets that we didn't function up to maximum level. (The attempt was made. However, the part of the brain that controls recognition, speech and manners was disabled due to blown bits and pieces that invaded from the other parts of the head that had just blown up.) There were several people there who had only ever seen THK & JK either on tv or as part of huge crowds in 2004. The up-close-and-personal thing was a bit, to say the least, overwhelming.

Perhaps you can convey these sentiments and our apologies. We are but human, after all.

12. Don't guilt yourself over something that is not your fault
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 03:41 PM by WildEyedLiberal
How on earth could you or any of us know about a Kerry blogger who does not post at DU? Like you said, there were about 6 threads saying "BOSTON TRIP ON KERRY'S BIRTHDAY, WHO WANTS TO GO?" I think we made it abundantly clear. We did not know about the meeting with JK until two weeks before the trip, and again, if there's someone who does not post at DU, how, pray tell, were we supposed to know to include them? You don't have to apologize for anything, because our aspect of the meeting - the organization among the Kerrycrats here - was as public as could be. This is ridiculous.

It also does a grievous disservice to JK and THK to suggest that they snubbed anyone. Having met both of them now, I have NO DOUBT that they would have wanted as many people as possible there. These kinds of rumors do no good for anyone. Again, anyone who did not get a chance to meet up with JK at the party because they were not a part of the "DU group" is regrettable, but I utterly fail to see how it is ultimately Tay's or anyone's responsibility.

I was but merely trying to say that we acted as human beings in shock sometimes act. It happens. It should also be forgiven. And we need to move on. And will.

Hey, WEL, we had a beer with John Kerry. (High Five.) (And he bought. Wow!)

BTW, you are totally wicked awesome. I adored meeting you. The absolute coolest moment of the whole weekend for me, the one that will stick with me forever is looking over at the Sen. Kerry (excuse me, Our John) as he was giving the speech and seeing you and VEK directly behind him. (And you behaved yourselves beautifully.) He couldn't have had two more intelligent, gorgeous, passionate or more caring people there. I think every single one of us felt that was both cosmically right and fitting that you two were -- right there, just lending support. It was a truly wonderful thing to see. (As I loved watching you and Vek later on with Our John down at the end of the table. You were so sweet. I had tears in my eyes at one point cuz it just was so nice to look over at you two talking and laughing and having a great time with JK.)

Now, go ace that other test. I can't give you a senatorial request, but as one of your East Coast Moms, I can still kick butt. Go forth and be brilliant my dear.

It simply rejoices the lurkers, that is all. So, could everybody calm down.

You got to talk to JK and have a beer with him and talk to the man. It is wonderful. Let us know what you can tell us and ignore what you dont think you can tell us. That is as simple as that. No need to make a mountain of that.

For the rest, thank to all of you who shared their experience with us. It was great to hear and we really enjoy it.

Strangely, I didn't get a look at his feet either. I was sitting right in front of him in the pub, but I was concentrating on his eyes, his face, his hands, his jacket and his cords. And oh that voice. It was nice when he was giving his speech, but oh so very nice when he was shootin' the shit. Excuse me while I go melt now.

On edit: I specifically remember his fingers too. He really uses his hands a lot to express himself. :)

90. What makes Kerry so hot
Is the passion that comes from within him.

It's his personality that makes his smile sexy.
His ability to make you know that he really cares about this country and its citizens that makes him radiate. The way he carries himself, the way he speaks when he speaks from his heart.
And his eyes. I am an "eye person" - the window to the soul. When I watch Kerry - on tv, not up close and personal as some of you have;) - his eyes are always so expressive, so full of life...even when he's pissed. It's like that thread I once posted of him and Teresa where I said you can almost feel how much he loves her by the way he looks at her.

That's what I think makes him so sexy. And those are positive qualities. Warmth, compassion
Imho calling Kerry sexy is a compliment.

35. I did not say JK & THK snubbed anyone
Please don't take this out of context. JK and THK spoke with the person in question unfortunately it was the DU'ers who were not very friendly. But you were all their in your group, so including an outsider wouldn't be suitable. Best to keep it intimate here rather than work with others in the blogosphere.

I think it is important to remember in the larger scale of things that there are many Kerry Bloggers and while all of you may have had a first time experience JK & THK know darn well they have bloggers all over the country and many have had similar experiences.

49. I'm wondering too
This whole story about a snubbed blogger doesn't make any sense to me. I was there and it just doesn't add up.

Even though I post on DU, I didn't know if I'd be able to make it to Boston, and then when I did, I had so much other personal baggage to deal with during the weekend that I didn't check in with everyone to make myself part of the group plans -- long story short, nobody here knew that I was coming, so my name wasn't among those read off by THK etc. But when I ran around introducing myself later, everyone was wonderfully nice and friendly, and if I hadn't been absolutely dying of exhaustion, I would've hung out with the gang for hours (now, of course, I wish I had!). I can't imagine that someone introduced themselves and got blown off. That doesn't match what happened to me at all. There may've been a misunderstanding of some kind, but not any kind of cliquish/snobbish coldness. Not in the slightest.

I'm really wondering who thought they got blown off, and what the context was.

52. I've been very clear
That a longtime Kerry Blogger was there at the party. She met with some of the DU'ers there and felt as though she got the cold shoulder. It's not appropriate to post her name here and honestly, WEL you keep insinuating for some reason that I can't be trusted. Get over yourself. I've been fighting the fight for JK in the blogosphere for almost 3 years. It's not at all helpful that YOU would post in various threads that my efforts to set up a private forum were circumspect, possibly for personal gain, and that "we" can't be too sure who trust due to the MCM incident. Remember who debunked the MCM incident, dear one, not to mention most of the crap that gets posted around the blogosphere. Remember who provides Kerry news here direct from the source long before others have it. Some of us spend our time in the blogosphere actually in service of JK rather than dreaming about things that I won't even qualify here because those things are MOST insulting to both JK and THK. I shudder to think what they would think if they read much of what has been posted here about the event.

Oh yes, it's happened before - wouldn't they have a hey day with all of the gushing. Think about it. The man has a reputation and no one does him any good gushing about the things we've all seen gushed about here. You may all think it is all in good fun - but it won't be fun if someone puts it out there in the blogosphere. It's all far more damning than anything MCM said.

56. Being admired isn't damning at all.
What people say to praise Kerry's beauty will do nothing but boost his reputation, and it's no fault of his anyhow if everyone thinks he's gorgeous. There are sites all over the net about this. Besides, one of the group had a shirt on with a picture of his face that said "SEXY!" and he totally loved it. He seemed quite comfortable with all the attention, and not at all embarrassed about being the sexiest thing at the table.

Not one bit.

Remember, they already tried to hang an intern story on JK. Drudge will stoop to any level and truth had nothing to do with it. Sexiness has to be sold very carefuly when you are a politico and usually only works well when you are single. Sex is dynamite in the hands of the opposition! And Vek, the press back many moon ago when JFK was running had a gentlemen's agreement NOT to publish that kind of slop! There was a girl JFK was seeing and her neighbor took pix of him leaving her house in the middle of the night. All the papers refused to run the story though they knew the truth of it. That is Ben Bradlee's story and Helen Thomas often relates back to it as well. We live in different times. Sigh.

110. EXACTLY. He was maligned for his appearance during the campaign.
They took the worst photos possible of him when he was thin and recovering from surgery and they probably played with them in Photoshop to make them look even worse. The media said horrible things about his appearance and Freepers and comics compared him to Frankenstein, Lurch and a "Sharpei's scrotum." And it got so much air time that when JK put on a bit of weight and started feeling better again, the SOBs started Botox rumors.

Not only was this below-the-belt unfair, but the disparaging remarks about his appearance were also untrue. He's always well-groomed and very attractive: very distinguished. His smile is engaging and the expression in his eyes is sincere. He is very straight and slim, and he looks nice in a suit. I'm no one to judge beauty or sexiness because I believe that is all in the eye of the beholder, but let me say this: the man is very attractive and women find him very appealing. Now this isn't news to the Senator, I'm pretty certain. He's probably had to bear this "cross" all his life. However, being trashed as he was for his appearance during the campaign must have stung a little bit, especially when it coincided with turning 60. So why not show him a little appreciation? I draw lines on how much appreciation I'm willing to show, but that's just me. (Okay, I just outed myself as a Puritan...well, not quite...but sorta.)

That said, the talk about how sexy he is can only help his public image. Everyone knows the guy is as true blue to his wife as they come. So nothing said about his sex appeal can damage JK. It only reflects on the existentialism of the people making the statements.

attractive? You think the drool was a giveaway?

Sure he could tell...from all the moonstruck expressions if nothing else. He's used to it, trust me.

After that recent thrashing by the right and that stupid video they put out against him, JK needed a little cheering up, to be sure. Bottom line: it was his birthday and everyone wanted to show him how loved and admired he was. Some of it took the form of praise for things he's worked on and fought for. Some of it took the form of moonstruck gazes and drool. ::shrugs:: It's all good.

a war hero: they attacked with the Swifties. He's always had a rep for being kinda dapper and very attractive: they got bad photos and trashed him as being old and creepy looking. Any good attribute the Senator had going into the campaign was a target. And the media ate it up because they are vultures.

86. Hey Vector! I use the term "sex sells" (and I believe it does)
as a PR term. But I also believe that that selling strategy is best left to experts as it is very dicey. JK for instance is far more electable when perceived as "reliable' and a "family man". Contrary to popular belief, that is what the woman voters look for. They actually lean to what they see as a "good provider', much as they look for that quality in the man they marry. Don't shoot the messanger, that is what the research says! A recent example of that would be John Edwards. He was viewed by many as "charasnmatic and sexy" but most of his real support came from women who liked both Elizabeth and his relationship with her!
And I KNOW this is SO different! I wouldn't dream of implying it wasn't!But the point was, it doesn't matter to some of the bottom feeders in the biz. And remember, when the Monica issue surfaced, all they had were pix in a rope line! They weren't even together! That being said, there is nothing wrong with admiring an attractive man . be he Senator or not! :-) ;)

How, precisely, do you suggest 'gushing' over JK could be used against him? He is a handsome, intelligent, and warmhearted man, and we happen to have good taste. Yes, some of us are more forthcoming with the compliments than others, but overall the tenor of this group is much more than that. Besides, I have seen gushing over other senators, generals, and congresspeople since way before even the primaries, and no fodder was made of it, even though a couple of them ran for president at the time and were easy targets.

Methinks anyone out there who has a problem with Kerry being a chick magnet suffers from a severe case of jealousy, and that says far more about them than it does about Kerry or us.

And I agree with you on the jealousy thing, and have posted as such - but you have to admit it's caused a lot of bile and probably hurt JK in subtle, if not overwhelming ways. But we can't do a whole lot about that.

What I hope is really clear is that when I answered the original question, that fangirling JK might make us look like, well, fangirls, my answer was hypothetical. There's this bit from the THK Elle article:

Back in Newark, a hundred or so Democratic Women for Kerry are gathering to meet the lady they sure hope will be the next first lady...

Kerry, the women explain, as they await the guest of honor, is their man because he has the “gravitas” the other Dem contenders lack. They’re well-versed on his résumé: the Vietnam War record (he is, as he likes to point out, the only candidate to have actually fought in a war) and all the other macho stuff. (He owns guns! He windsurfs! He’s hot!) And thank goodness, because it nicely counteracts the “liberal from Massachusetts” tag that they know is going to be a bitch.

But that's about as much as I could ever find. Alas.

I believe I'm very aware. Like you said, they would be wrong to challenge the seriousness of this group.

84. We do both. Effortlessly, and effectively.
Any one of us here can back up the fun bits with a whopping dose of cold hard truth and political fact. We know our stuff, are on the ball, and have proved time and time again that we can argue the issues with the best of them.

The worst thing in the world is a political wonk with NO sense of humor.

You need to have both. Political savvy and visceral admiration needn't be mutually exclusive, nor should they be. There are a lot of folks out there who still view our Kerry and stuffy and aloof.

We don't, and admitting it does nothing to hurt our message.

99. This is horrible
We had an experience that was exciting and we wanted to share it with the group. I'm personally not a "blogger" and other bloggers are incredibly important. That was the point of us being recognized at the event. And so what if people here don't want to share the pub experience? It was fluffy small talk and its good to keep secrets sometimes. The most important messages were that JK and his people appreciate EVERYONE who blogs and keeps people informed and that his PAC has been helping candidates all around the country. I'm sorry other bloggers couldn't come because they would have gotten appreciation too. So we're all excited and you have to come here and insult people. Everybody contributes in different ways and I would never minimize anyone's efforts because it shows that they care about the direction the country is taking. And you wonder why people didn't want to join your forum. Going around insulting people isn't helpful. Now, if you'll excuse, I have other things to do.

104. I was insulted first and my eoffrts were minimized.
I'm thrilled everyone had a good time. I know I've had a good time at events too. Been hugged, kissed had my picture taken, came home and wrote about it - what happened, what JK said all of it. So that others could know.

It's interesting that almost every person at the event took my gesture to set up a private forum to discuss things the wrong way and almost every person at the event has accused me of alterior motives.

95. I did not meet a non-DU JK blogger there either
And I don't recall anyone being given the cold-shoulder.

9. If I'm not mistaken
Weren't we asked by someone on THK's staff to keep anything other than the fact that we were attending the event off the forum? Although I'm unsure of the details, there may have even been someone checking the forum to make sure we behaved on that account.

10. That does make sense
Of course they would want only a few to know what was happening and of course they would want to limit how many bloggers were there. And no doubt they all have time to check in here and read everything. Absolutely - I'm sure you are not mistaken.

I thought that in the effort to build up support for JK in the blogosphere as is the "mission" so I understand what little details that have been shared, you would want to know about this in effort to make sure that reach out is made at future events to include other bloggers who might be there that don't participate here. I hope that makes sense. No one likes to feel left out. I'm sure you understand.
