So far it seems like Tay, Whome and Rox have all chimed in with their stories, so I guess I will too. (They've done such a fantastic job of relating the events of the weekend by the way, so anything I have to say will more than likely be redundant.)
First of all, Tay Tay, Whome and Rox were all absolutely fantastic hosts! (Special thanks to Rox for letting me stay with her Saturday night.) It was so nice having three folks who were so knowledgeable about the Boston area along for the ride because they were able to tell us lots of "this happened here" and "this is WICKED old" kind of details that we would have probably missed other wise on our tour of all things John Kerry.
The entire group was just awesome. Everyone got along so well and it was like we had known each other for ever. I don't think I've laughed as hard as I did this past weekend in a long, long time. Before the "big event" when we were together we had some great conversations about our loathing of all things Republican, important Democratic issues, and of course John Kerry. Those conversations ranged from very serious to extremely, extremely silly.
I think we were all a little nervous about actually meeting "the man" right up to the point it actually happened. At that point (just as Tay had predicted) Sen. Kerry and Teresa put us right at ease and I think our apprehensions and nervousness evaporated. (Mostly anyway.) By the time John joined us in the pub we were TOTALLY at ease talking to him. That experience was really surreal. He just sat down among us and began talking to us as if he chatted with us every day. He was truly interested in what we had to say, and seemed to feel very comfortable sharing thoughts and ideas with us.
What was so wicked awesome is that he wanted to come down to the pub to meet with us all after reading the cards and seeing all of the post marks. He called his assistant Roger (who was at the pub with us) to confirm the meaning of all of the post marks which we included. He was honestly, and truly touched by our gift to him, and we all made sure that he understood that those assembled were just of small sampling of the names represented on the cards. Visiting us at the bar was not something he had to do by any means - it was HIS birthday after all. He WANTED to come down because of EVERYONE in this group including those of you who couldn't make it to Boston!
Exactly what was said in his speech at the main event or in the pub even remains a little foggy at the moment. I wouldn't want to give any direct quotes because I was just sort of basking in the moment and not really filing away specific details in my brain. (Others may have been, me - not so much.)
When it was time for him to go back home to celebrate his birthday with his family in Beacon Hill, he had hugs and pecks on the cheeks for everyone. Aloof my ass! (Oh, and when he was hugging us as we came up on stage during the main event, he said that he needed to hug us all because he had promised to do so on that terrible day, 11/03/04. How sweet is that!) I'm still blown away by the fact that he came down to see us ON HIS BIRTHDAY! He's a US Senator and technically the rightful POTUS for goodness sake!
Just a word too about Mama T. She is absolutely fantastic and beautiful. At the event she took the time to talk to many members of our group and again, was genuinley interested in what they had to say. What an incredible, classy lady. On Monday, when the orchid finally came, I was honored to walk to Beacon Hill with those of us remaining in town for the morning to deliver the flower to her. Guess what? I GOT TO RING JOHN KERRY'S DOORBELL! How cool is that?
Other than that, I learned some new driving techniques and came back home with many new words and phrases in my vocabulary. It was an epic weekend for sure!
This is getting to be way to long so I'll stop for now but I just want to say to anyone who missed this weekend's event, don't worry, I have a feeling this certainly isn't going to be the last opportunity for us all to get together again. Maybe next time it will be a little less "spur of the moment" and more folks will be able to attend.
