Christmas talk: Some political, some not
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 12:50 PM by TayTay
Anyone have any good stories 'bout talking with the relatives at Christmas? We had some political talk, although it was over-shadowed by talk about Johnny Demon and his defection from the Red Sox and his desire to join the Evil Empire. (Sigh, poor deluded man. They'll never love him the way we did.)

I had the usual argument with two of my brothers over just exactly how evil the Rethuglicans are and how they are subverting the Constitution and all. (Geez, these people are touchy. You point out to them that their heroes are undermining the Constitution of the United States, ruining all that is good in America and are greedy bahstids to boot and they take it personally. Yikes!)

I spoke with my Mom's 84 year old boy friend who started the day out serving Christmas meals to the homeless and poor at St. Monica's Church in South Boston. (Helped in serving out 200 meals or so.) He told me that the house next to the one he lives in in Southie sold recently for $400,000. (And the place had dirt floors in the basement and no central heating. The owner converted to condos and sold the two new units for $500,000 each. Soon, there won't be anyone left in Southie, which is both good and bad, as usual.) Anyway, I told this guy about my 'beer with Kerry' event. He told me that the natives were restless in his neighborhood and wanted the Senator to come home and spend some time on local stuff. (Some of this is spill-over cuz that scum Gov Romney hasn't done diddly.) So, ahm, Senator, go see the folks in Southie. Apparently, they have something to say. (as if being vocal was ever their problem in the first place.) The latest thing that has got them down, still, is the Gillette take over and how Romney let it go through. Sigh! There will be no jobs left around he-yah soon. Sigh. We'll all have to go to some god-forsaken part of the country like New Hampshire and learn how to milk cows or something. Sigh! (LOL! just massive LOL!) Of course, the Christmas dinner we were both at was in Londonderry, NH. Sigh! Hmmmmm.

1. our family skipped the gifts this year and donated to a charity
We each suggested a charity and drew it from the hat. We ended up giving to a charity that provides homes for mentally ill. I'm proud of my family because instead of gifts, we scrounged up 250 dollars to give.

2. That is incredible.
Good for you! That sounds like the true meaning of the Holidays. (All the Holidays. They all celebrate the return of the light to the world at this time of year. Well, your action brings light back to the world as well.)

Love and joy!

3. well, i'm feeling in a nasty mean mood, so let me tell you what

happened a few years back with my fundie "Christian" inlaws. We all use to exchange gifts. Then it got expensive, so we drew a name each.

I suggested instead of those options, let's pool the money we would have used for gifts and donate to a charity like Habitat for Humanity (or something). And they refused. They said, "But we look forward to sharing and opening gifts."

That was the point I realized that I as a jewish person (who converted to Christianity) understood more about Jesus and the meaning of Christmas than they did.

And I guess I'm being mean and telling you this, because today they practically sneared about our political beliefs being "drastically opposed" as if I should have something to be ashamed about.

4. I understand that.
The whole dialogue in the country has reinforced the idea that the Rethug and Wingnut view is the norm and that anyone who disagrees is out-of-touch. Damn, but we have a lot of work to do to put things back into proper perspective. My sister-in-law actually said to me during a discussion at Christmas that, 'isn't it a shame that they are trying to turn the response to Hurricane Katrina into a racial thing?' like this should not even be discussed and aren't the people who even hint that racism played a role in the reponse are crazy liberal moonbats. Sigh! (Yeah, I got my two cents in on that one, let me tell you. The bridge story in NOLA came up then, let me tell you.)

5. what was her response to the bridge story?

I mean, most people heard about the gun shots.

Besides, tay, what depresses me is how they have made it seem as if the left are a bunch of baby-killers (abortion), sex addicts, into drugs, swear alot, and socialist commies.

I'm tire of it. Because frankly, I'm not a socialist commie, I'm for eliminating abortions by eliminating unwanted pregnancies (education and maybe the day after e.c. care), but since I believe in teaching abstinence as well, then I'm not some sort of "free love" type person.

I'm for being anti-discrimination not as seen as 'pro-gay' because I basically think it's none of my business. BUT I think people need to get the heck out of bedrooms and instead worry about the amount of rapes out there and the fact that more girls are being raped at younger and younger ages.

6. Same here.....for the adults, anyway.
My spouse's family is very involved in the arts, and the donations went to restoring artwork and homes of artists whose lives were mostly destroyed during Katrina.

8. My artist musician son and I had a long discussion
He said he is so tired of simple minded Americans and there are many. He said he was scared for his and his generation's future. People will not listen to common sense and reason. He said the reason he thought Kerry lost was because of corporate play and not just here in the US but the world. He believes that if something is not done soon it will become a corporate world. He sees the shift of the haves and have nots and it is happening all around the world.

He told me he is going to fight it with his music. He just wrote a song called "Citizen Soldier", it is awesome, as soon as he records it I will post.

I told him about the beer with Kerry and the Kerrycrats and he was in awe of you guys. He would love to sit down and talk with JK, he thinks he is the best politician out there, and a truly great American.

It was a good talk, he said he wanted to talk like this for a long time but does not trust doing it over the phone. He got me Walmart the movie for Xmas and it is a must see. I watched that and everything he talked about was seen through that movie.

PS. Ray of light, what a great thing for your family to do. We decided to contribute to the USO through JK's site, so we all chipped in $20. and made a $100. contribution.
