Question for anyone up on their Democratic Party history.
Has anyone who ever failed to capture the party's nomination one year, ever come back four (or more) years later to become the Democratic nominee? I know it happened with Gore, but when ran for the nomination in '00 he was more or less unopposed. Anyone know?

1. Off the top of my head, Humphrey lost nomination to JFK in 1960,
then was nominee in 1968. May have been others before, but I'm pretty sure there haven't been any since.

2. I think Clinton considered running and explored the idea in 1988
but backed out quickly. George McGovern briefly ran after RFK was assinated in 1968 and was then the candidate in 1972. Did Mondale run in 1976? (I remember many people were running that year and in 1992)

3. I don't think Mondale did in '76.
I thought he might have, but what I could tell from my Google search he didn't.
