VCR ALERT: JK on CSPAN-3!!
CSPAN is re-running JK's Senate floor speech on the eve of Gulf War I. It'll show at 3:27 AM and 8:25 AM Eastern time today. I'm going to TIVO it and can make some copies. You can also watch it on the computer when it's streaming.

1. interesting
will try to catch it. i wish cspan had shown the many clips of him other than Vietnam last year. it would have been nice to see them play his committee hearings when HE was senator.

2. They did at least once have a show based on excerpts of his Senate
career. He really did look very young at the beginning.

3. Also this, later on today
Speech
Tommy the Cork: Washington's Insider
Woman's National Democratic Club
Washington, District of Columbia (United States)
ID: 182500 - 06/29/2004 - 0:50 - $29.95

Monagan, John, U.S. Representative, D, Connecticut
McKean, David, Author

Mr. McKean, Senator John Kerry's chief of staff, talked about his book, Tommy the Cork: Washington's Ultimate Insider from Roosevelt to Reagan, published by Steerforth. In the book, the author examines how Thomas Corcoran became the first powerful Washington lobbyist. Mr. Corcoran began his career as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. He later worked with Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the New Deal era, and became acquainted with such notable figures as Sam Rayburn, Joseph Kennedy, Evita Peron, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reagan. Mr. Corcoran represented various interests in Washington for nearly forty years.

***********************
How Dems Lobby and are clean, as opposed to some of Them

In 2004, David McKean, a veteran Senate aide, published a critically praised book on Thomas “Tommy the Cork” Corcoran, perhaps the most successful Washington lobbyist of the 20th century. But the Senate ethics committee advised him not to disclose on the dust jacket the name of the senator he worked for, John Kerry, lest he be seen as using his position for commercial gain.

The restriction hampered his ability to promote his book. Indeed, when a Washington bookstore inadvertently identified Mr. McKean’s position in an advertisement, he had to cancel an appearance there. A very small victory, one would guess, for the capital’s reputation.

*********************************

Sigh! We follow the rules, they don't.

All thes Republican liars talking about lobby reform. Frist? Please! They are going to pretend they weren't familiar with the inner workings of their own party (and the Bush campaign). Give me a break. Rant over.

And he never gained a damn ounce. And this speech applies even more to this war than to Desert Storm. (Wow! only 47, my age, and just wow! Yum!)

Read to us again, oooooowwwwww, glasses.

24. No problem
I'm running off copies as fast as I can -- it's taking up space on my friends' TIVO, but they're mostly cool with that so long as I don't leave it there forever. Right now it looks like I need to make 5 copies, including yours.

If anyone else wants a copy please speak up or forever hold your peace!

Why pull up something from the beginning of Desert Storm? I know it's related to today's occupation of Iraq, but didn't think anyone was focused on that right now.

situation when he returns. That speech is a very powerful argument against war except as a very last resort.

26. They were doing a historical retrospective on Desert Storm
They had the speakers lined up that were pro-war back then and made the case for the first Pres. Bush's actions after the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein in Aug of '90. They needed an alternative voice that made the case against going to war. Kerry's speech was very powerful and garnered a lot of attention at the time.

29. I have now watched this four times since yesterday.
This is a brilliant speech, it nails everything that's wrong with the current Bush administration, from the rush to war to overreaching powers.

I know I'll watch it again, besides Kerry is so damn cute. :loveya:

Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 11:23 PM by TayTay
he got 80% of the 18-29 year old women's vote. Gee, I wonder why? (This speech was in '91, the next election for him was '96. Mass women are neither stupid nor blind.)

And, did it strike anyone else how pointedly anti-Bush this speech was? Does anyone think little Georgie, daddy's enforcer, forgot about this speech?

32. It also points to his consistency
That speech could have been delivered about this Iraq War. The objections and the fear of the consequences of a 'rush to war' were all there then, just as they are now. Wow!
