Live Blogging 1-30-06 Thread 2
With 65 on the first one, thought this would be a good idea.
Lautenberg is up now.

2. I hope he will support filibuster...
I just called his office about 10 minutes ago to ask him to vote against cloture. What is WRONG with these people who won't vote for filibuster???? It's just DEBATE, not firebombing!

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 02:42 PM by karynnj
I assume most Democrats calling are against it - he needs to run this year. So I hope he realizes that he may have an opponent. He sounds like a no, with the but....

He's also NO!! He's saying much the same as Lautenberg.

8. I would guess he would
NJ is pretty liberal and if his concerns are what they are, not voting against cloture would likely be seen as a Yes vote here in NJ. He is going to have a tough election. Fr Gov Kean is pretty well regarded and his son Tom Kean Jr will likely be the Republican. He'll need all the active Democrats he can get.

His office took down names and addresses (and I'm sure they got the phone numbers via caller id). This should be a great data base of politically active Democrats. Lautenberg's office didn't take info - my guess is that his decision was never really in question.

Editted to say the rest of his speech is absolutely great. He sounds every bit as liberal as Corzine and Lautenberg. Wow, now making the case that Alito doesn't reflect NJ.

12. My man Menendez. While on the subject of NJ,
he recently let the kook next door have it:

Menendez chides Santorum over threat in dredging fight
By Cynthia Burton
Inquirer Staff Writer

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) wants to talk to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.), his new colleague, about some threats Santorum has been making.

Santorum has said he would shut down special legislation and funding for New Jersey until the state agreed with Pennsylvania on dredging the Delaware River.

snip...

"Sen. Santorum may have a hold on legislation, but so do I," Menendez said. He added that he "wouldn't want to hold up legislation and appointments Pennsylvania wants."

10. About Reid
I understand that this "Tomorrow night, the president will undoubtedly praise the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito" was part of his final comments. I take back 95% of all the good things I said and thought about this guy in the past. He may think it, and it is most likely correct, BUT WHY SAY IT???

13. What a jerk- I've also given him the benefit of doubt
but I'm furious that he didn't give Kerry the time slot - he could speak after 4;30 - for Kerry it would be just for the record. The rudeness of McConnell was bad enough - but Reid's action to continue with his altogether lame speech rather than letting the most compelling speaker we have give his sumation shows he really doesn't care.

Kerry's class in dealing with this was impressive.

14. Here's my question
If we do manage to get a filibuster, what will happen? Will Reid think it's obstructionist then to USE the filibuster and organize his senators to do what it takes to do some good with the debate?

17. Reid and a lot of other Dems didn't want to fight this.
They didn't want Sens. Kennedy & Kerry to bring it up as they thought it was both divisive and took away from 'Dem unity' on fighting the Repubs on the wiretapping and Abramoff front. (I, of course, disagree completely.)

I don't think Sen. Reid particularly cares if the esteemed Jr. Senator from MA finished he remarks on the floor or not. I don't particularly think Sen. Reid is kindly disposed to the Jr. Sen from MA and does not care what he does or doesn't do. (Just MHO, btw.) He will, however, gladly ask said Sen for money and time and effort in a cause that Sen. Reid backs.

18. By now, everyone knows what I think of Reid so it doesn't bear repeating!
Reid didn't support this filibuster. He doesn't really represent Democratic values and his votes prove it. He is more harmful to us than Lieberman because he is leadership. And Kerry has proven himself again today. Reid needs to be replaced as Leader! Daschele was actually more effective. Harry is an illusion.

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 03:20 PM by karynnj
What's really sad is we may never hear the second half of Kerry's speech. Usually Kerry ends far better than he starts out - and the entire part we heard was absolutely beautiful. I hope at least the words will be added to the record - so we could read it.

You are right that Kerry was a genuine leader on this - that it appears reasonably close is a miracle. Seeing that Broder said yesterday that it will be Kennedy and Kerry and a few other Senators that's a major accomplishment. The odd thing is that Kerry has a history of trying to find common ground and bipartisanship. Kerry also has an amazing ability not to hold grudges. I just hope the liberals knocking Kerry see that Reid et al is making an uphill climb harder.

Reid is overrated. He needs to be replaced immediately. We need a senator from a blue state as minority leader, because he/she would be immune to blackmail and threats by the repugs.

23. Reid is not being effective, I agree
He is also alienating a lot of people that he should be drawing in closer. There is no reason whatsoever for Reid to ignore the base and not say kind things about this good-faith effort to uphold core democratic principles. His 'grab for the middle' is mystifying as there is very little middle to grab for. (I saw an estimate that all of the effort in '04, in the end, went into convincing somewhere around 4% of the voters to make up their mind. This is the 'Great middle' we hope to entice by selling out our core values -- 4%?)

I was not happy last year when Sen. Kerry's DSM letter was ignored by leadership. I am far less happy now. No more contributions from me to DCCC or DSCC. I will send that money to only one or two Senators. I've had it.

31. what gets me about the 4%
is that if our party stayed true to its democratic ideals instead of constantly lurching to the center to please that 4%, the voters gained from the base would more than make up for the 4% we can never count on anyway.
I'm tired of having to cater to a group of voters who make up their minds at the last minute, and usually based on something idiotic like 'he's just more likeable'.

28. Question
How/when can the leadership be changed? I have no idea about the rules. There will probably a majority of dems that will vote against cloture, reluctantly or not. Reid most obviously did not want this to happen. Durbin would be nice and probably willing.

Yeah - why? Because Kerry KNOWS that we need leadership?

I'm so mad. We are never going to win any elections with a wimpy leader like Reid.

But they agreed that the whole speech could be entered into the Senate record. This happened because Stabenow started late. I don't hold that against Stabenow, because sometimes unexpected things happen. But it sucks that he couldn't finish his speech.

is that I had turned off Brownback who was on before JK because he was being such a ZOMBIE. He was literally repeating talking points in the most disinterested and smug manner imaginable. Not an original thought, not an ounce of passion, not an iota of concern for any citizen or for the republic. And then -- to see those two great, dedicated men who have worked so hard and given so much for so long out of SHEER love for this country and everyone in it, no matter how humble...

It kills me, it really does.

46. Kennedy's letter says it all
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 04:34 PM by ProSense
From: Senator Ted Kennedy <action@tedkennedy.com>

To:
Subject: My Decision
Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 18:56:26 +0000

Dear

Nothing makes us stronger than the values of equality and justice that Americans throughout our nation's history have fought tirelessly to preserve and advance. Now our commitment to these values is being tested once again: Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court threatens the fundamental rights and freedoms we cherish, and we must do everything we can to protect them.

It is for this reason that Senator Kerry and I are doing everything we can to keep Samuel Alito off the Supreme Court. The crucial vote will come this afternoon, when Senators vote on whether to end debate and vote on the nomination.

Samuel Alito's troubling record speaks for itself. The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings confirmed our worst fears, and we have to take the strongest possible stand against him.

Americans deserve better. We need Supreme Court Justices whose commitment to protecting our rights and freedoms is beyond dispute -- a Court whose members transcend partisan politics to inspire Americans, not divide us.

The vote by the Senate on a Supreme Court Justice is second only to the vote to send our men and women to war.

I hope you will join me and do everything you can to protect the values that unite us as Americans.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Edward M. Kennedy

P.S. Too often, Americans take our rights for granted -- and that's never been more dangerous. Remind yourself of what's at stake and then make your case to others.
