Kerry raised more than $5 million in 2005 [AP]
Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 06:04 AM by demdiva
Why does everyone think John Kerry's 2008 presidential chances are dead? This past week, John Kerry solidified the devotion of his base. And, today, we see he's on solid fundraising ground.

KERRY RAISED MORE THAN $5 MILLION in 2005

By WILL LESTER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Democratic Sen. John Kerry, the party's unsuccessful 2004 presidential nominee, raised $5.6 million last year and has nearly $10 million if he decides to make another run for the White House.

Most of Kerry's cash is left over from the 2004 campaign, $9.1 million in his presidential campaign account and almost $800,000 in his political action committee account and his Senate election account.

The Massachusetts senator has given millions to his party and other candidates, a typical party-building move from someone weighing another presidential bid. Kerry also has more than $5 million in a legal fund from the campaign, though that total could change as his 2004 campaign accounts are closed out.

Kerry's fundraising, while solid, hasn't quite kept pace with the woman considered the Democratic front-runner for the presidential nomination - New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

1. Yeah, he told us this in Boston
He said that the money has been fine. That's not the problem. They had tons of money in '04 and were neck and neck with the Repubs right down to the wire on that front.

Who benefits if the rumor gets out that Kerry can't fundraise and is running out of donors?

3. Hmmm, I didn't say that directly, but
it is possible that certain people around a certain Senator from a state that borders Mass might just be using this false rumor to try and knock out a rival early. It coudl happen.

14. You mean the one I have recieved at least 6 fake surveys from?
I honestly don't understand how that format became so common - they are really so insulting. The questions have no brainer answers and i'm sure are even tabulated. I really prefer the straight forward Kerry requests.

I intentially am on all the Kerry lists (I think). I never gave Hillary any information (nor did my husband) - but I get more Hillary solicitations than Kerry ones.

It seems stupid to use the argument that he can't fundraise, when she and her apologists know that quarterly numbers are public. Also, she should be ahead of him for fund raising in 2005 - she has a 2006 race. Even though she has no real opponent, she will likely spend money on that election.

17. I got off her email list,
but still get those stupid "survey" mailings from her. It gives me great pleasure to dump them straight into the recycling bin.

18. same here - we're even on with misspelled versions of our name
I did send back the survey from the Republican Senate campaign. I had fun writing in a fifth boxes with the responses that all of us would agree to. (Also after rating Bush poor on the war on terror in the space I got to put the whole Tora Bora...outsourced to AFrican warlords... thing.) I mailed it back with some junk mail coupons for things like air duct cleaning (with dust mite pictures).

5. No, I just meant that there are rumors and counter-rumors
about money, as there always are. Kerry said the money is fine. Okay, sounds good to me. I thought it was fine last year. And he gave a heck of a lot of money away. Geez, a lot of money. There are other candidates who are getting complaints because their fundraisers suck up money and take it out of state. Kerry is not doing that at all.

10. Ah, I am suffering from an obvious humor deficit this morning.
I shall attempt to alleviate the intense seriousness of that situation by bloviating my way out of it. Perhaps a surplus of words that obfuscate my meaning and leave me sounding rather uninteresting and a bit dense. Ah, that should about do it. I have now reached borishness, though I doubt the trip is worth it.

Okay, I'm going now to get my humor-thingee looked at and see if it blew a gasket or something. (Maybe I need an oil change?) :freak:

Thanks!

6. I think it's as much that the Democrats
are sore losers as anything and the Deaniacs are still mad Kerry got the 2004 nomination.

15. Those numbers are interesting
It looks like Kerry did use or give away to other candidates most of what he raised last year. I wonder if he will transfer the balance of the legal fund to the DNC for a permanent legal fund after he closes all the 2004 actions. It's a huge amount of money, but transferring it to a 2008 account could set off a fire storm.

I happened across last night over at firedoglake. I thought everyone here would appreciate it.

Wonderful and important work, Jane and Redd. Seeing how energized people are you just know we're ready for more. It feels so much better to be able to fight for a cause than to have to commiserate always about how wretched the Ref*cklicans are. And it's time, now, to prove to this sad-sack group of Democratic politicians that if they don't have the sense to make their way back to us, we'll find others who will. It's my feeling that Kerry's rival for the nomination is not yet visible; Hillary's toast.

20. They make a good point about it feeling better to work
than to gripe. Kerry really needs to get back to them once he gets a few minutes to breathe to think them and re-inforce what they and we did. If he can then get them to focus on 2006 activities because it IS 2006, that would be great.

I know I only called to get involved in Morris County (where Democrats always lose) because I agreed 100% with Kerry's view that the Democrats had to do this - even though I used shyness as an excuse previously. The reward was feeling better. Our local candidates lost, but Corzine won.

I think he will be the anti-DLC if he does run in 2008.
