GV, where was your fourth photo taken? I'm pretty sure I have one that I took of myself (with the camera's self-timer) in front of that "building" but I don't remember where I was. I was traveling alone, basically just wandering around the countryside. ("...not all those who wander are lost...)

I was there in '89 way before John Kerry was on my radar - I must have been cosmically drawn to the area. Actually Dingle in County Kerry was one of my very favorite places on the trip.

I heard it sung by Irish singers, but it may not be. You don't need to be Irish to be cynical and bright at the same time. That sound of the cheerful acceptance of the improbability of everything and the sure and certain knowledge of doom can infect other cultures too! And the lovely thought that no matter what happens, it can always get worse. (Murphy was an Irish optimist, after all.) And everything goes better with friends, music and a few pints. Brilliant!

is there a way you celebrate this day or do most Irish Americans just do it like everyone who is non irish also ?

Usually I cook up corned beef and cabbage, but because this year it falls on a Friday during Lent, I'll have to wait and cook it tomorrow.

Other then that, wear my green and call my kids Carey, Danny and Timothy, had to give them Irish names to go with their Italian last name, and make sure they wear the green. Oh and I have to listen to my favorite Irish song, it was my mother's too, Oh Danny Boy.

And sure tis time to celebrate my high holy holiday! I am a weaing of the green and am going out tonite! Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all! I celebrated early by hosing my District meeitns as a cocktail party at my house. We had the congressional candidates and Sec of State candidate as well as our leg and State Senate candidate(My DH) and our DNC representative! AZ is going blue, I tells ya! And this was one of the most fun events I have ever done. Amazing what a cuople of glasses of wine will do to liven up a district meeting!Methinks we should do this more often. Hmmm. Drinking liberally anyone?????

One of my daughters-in-law plays the Irish whistle, as well as the Pan flute, and we often play this song together. (I accompany her on my hammer dulcimer.)

"Sally Gardens" is one of my family's favorite Irish airs.

I love a lot of the traditional stuff, and I adore the reels. I also like a lot of the songs that came over with the folks music in the 50's & 60's. They are not traditional, but I learned them as a child, so they are for me.

I guess some of my favorites are:

Port Lairge (Happiest reel in captivity. The title is the Irish for the town of Waterford.)
The Whistling Gypsy. (Damn, I love that song. I am a soppy friggin romantic. Yikes!)
Johnny We Hardly Knew Ya (Ahm, poingnant song.)

And about 1,000 more. Some for the sheer silliness. Some because you can sing the chorus out loud and some because I just like happy reels. Sigh.

Yes, reels are wonderful! I agree Port Lairge is the happiest. (I didn't know it was named for a town named Waterford.)

I love The Whistling Gypsy also, and Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye.

Another of my favorite airs is Eamonn a' Chnoic - Ned of the Hills. Its haunting melody breaks my heart.

Too bad there's not an Irish pub near me... one with live Irish music. Or maybe it's a good thing there's not. I'd be there every night, I think. My sister who lives in Boston frequents one that has live Irish music. I suppose there are many of them in Boston.
