Terror in the Steel City
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 07:36 PM by globalvillage
The once-proud City of Champions jumped the shark today, or perhaps just the pigeon.
The latest victim of the constant barrage of pseudo-terror is my very own city of Pittsburgh, PA.
The incident was first reported as a bearded sniper in camo on the roof of a downtown building with a high powered rifle and scope resulting in the lockdown of a fairly large portion of the downtown area and closure of the south hills entrance to the city. The 'terrorist' was later discovered to be a maintenance man, reducing the surplus pigeon population with a pellet gun.

CNN picked up the story as police in riot gear swarmed the cultural district in the heart of downtown. School kids and office workers were kept locked in buildings and told to stay away from windows. The flack-jacketed mayor was called in to oversee the melee.

I am so fucking humiliated.

A worker at a Downtown building who was using a pellet gun with a scope to scare pigeons prompted a massive police response that led to the shutdown of several blocks this afternoon.

An area around Stanwix Street, Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Penn Avenue was closed to vehicles and pedestrians after at least two people in neighboring buildings saw the man with a gun in the old Pittsburgh Allegheny County Thermal building that faces Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

Dozens of Pittsburgh police were seen near the theater district looking to the man with a gun that had a scope of lighting device on it. There were reports that the suspect wore a beard and camouflage clothing.

A SWAT team was also called to the scene.

CBS radio station KDKA reports several witnesses reportedly saw a man with a high-powered rifle and dressed in camouflage enter the five-story PACT Building located near the city's theatre district.

About two hours later, police were able to locate the man's supervisor, who said that the man sometimes brings the pellet gun to work to shoot pigeons.

City Police Chief Dom Costa did not immediately say if charges would be filed.

Mayor Bob O'Connor, who was on the scene in a bulletproof vest, at first called the man a "presumed sniper."

A caller to 911 reported seeing a man dressed partly in camouflage and carrying what appeared to be a rifle equipped with a telescopic or laser gunsight, police at the scene said.

Mayor Bob O'Connor, wearing a bulletproof vest, called the man a "presumed sniper."

Several roads and bridges leading into the city were closed, city buses were rerouted, and students at nearby schools were kept inside.

Vice prick syndrome, also know as Cheneyitis.

2. So this dude shoots at a few pigeons
and manages to close down the city and summon a SWAT Team, while Darth Cheney shoots a man in the face and is rewarded with thick juicy steak and a nice stiff drink. What makes one man a "presumed sniper" and another man the "victim" of his own carelessness?

3. What? This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.
Talk about over kill. I suppose they never thought to actually have someone check it out first.

4. In fairness GV, this could have happened in any city in America
Remember, be afraid, be afraid all the time. Don't feel so humiliated. There was no way that the passersby could have known this was a guy knocking off excess pidgeons. I know this was brutal overkill to lock everything down, but I could easily see this happening in the big city near me. It's the times, sigh!

6. That's what I'm ashamed of.
It could happen anywhere in America. Otherwise, I'd just move.

Sorry. Someone tosses something on the WH lawn and they call out the robo-bomb-gadget. Carter would have just picked it up and tossed it in the recycle bin.
Some guy picks off pigeons with a bb gun, and they bring in the bomb squad and the swat team and shut down the city.

This is just fucked up. This country needs to just stop being so afraid of every damn thing. I'm sick of it.

And I am NOT afraid. So I win. bush* and the media and everyone who wants me to piss myself everytime someone says 'boo' have lost, and I have won.

So there.

5. Somebody thought it was a seahawk
Come to take revenge!

Hey, did you see my little hick caravan today? Friggin' idiots who can't wait 24 goddamned hours to travel 60 miles from the coast inland. There is NO excuse for getting caught in a snowstorm in this state, they all blow out that fast. Lord Jesus be praised, the BLM done saved us.

Talk about embarrassing.

Then there was my neighbor in eastern Oregon who dressed up in camos, painted his face, and hunted skunks with bow and arrows.

Give me your pigeon shooter ANY DAY.

7. On behalf of the pigeons, I'm glad they caught the guy.
;-)

Seriously, though, the pigeons I see in Philly are often quite pretty. Oh, we have some run of the mill gray pigeons, but most of them are pretty interesting to look at. Of course I take the train in so don't have to worry about parking on the street...

Okay, okay it's pretty effed up that they locked down the whole city to catch a guy with a pellet gun who was shooting at pigeons.

9. Sure!
Too bad it's only for the day.

PM me with a good guess about what time you can break away, so I can block my calendar. :)
