Does Google have an antidemocratic bias?
This morning, I did a search on Joh Kerry and here is what I found: not only all the articles that were posted in the "Sorted by relevance" part were grossly negative (from freeper sites), but the picture that appeared on my screen was a picture of "John Edwards" on 365gay.com (an old picture). I understand how people can manipulate the list of sites that google gives, but the picture?

1. I don't know the answer to your questions
but I clicked on John Edwards photo and there was a story about his response to Mary Cheney and her book. When I hit your link again, there was a photo of Mary Cheney next to the top link. Maybe the photo rotates?

2. It might just be that it is the RW that is playing the same game
that had "miserable failure" pulling up Bush's web site. These RW sites may also have done a good job registering with search engines. We noticed here that the RW seems to pay more attention (though it's negative) to Kerry than the left does. It may well be that these RW site Kerry stories are viewed more than the Left wing ones.

On the left, you may have people who support others who really want Kerry to fade away.

3. Google is actually a BLUE company.
From buyblue.org:

$71,500 to Democrats
$0 to Republicans
$0 to Others
$71,500 in Total Contributions

http://www.buyblue.org/search/node/google

The problem isn't Google, the problem is that searches been saturated with right-wing propaganda. I'm been talking about this for a long time, but nobody seems to care. Sorry, but it is true. I've tried to initiate a plan on how to attack the search engine RW propaganda with a little of our own and I get few if any replies.

We desperately need to take on certain themes like "flip-flop" and turn it on the republicans and the other day I posted in here and in DU about this asking for help and didn't get one reply in either place.

I posted previously asking people to commit to 100 posts on 100 different sites and only got one or two people willing to do anything.

We can talk policy in here until we are blue in the face (no pun) and we are probably convincing very few people of very little. The sad fact is that the next elections will be decided on pulp rather than policy and the RW has the market cornered on pulp. We need to saturate the searches with posts and with sites of our own. Everybody can get a free home page. In fact, having several is a good idea. And it only costs a few dollars to set up a domain name. Web pages sit there forever and get into searches based on KEYWORDS, CONTENT and LINKS.

If you think it is just Google, try searching Blogger.com for John Kerry. These blogs are free and the people who put up these "blogs" are just cranking out BS like there is no tomorrow. (BAD choice of words...because that might be where things are heading.) It wouldn't cost a DIME for everyone who posts here to also put up a blog. Linking to other pro-Kerry sites is important too. I'm always on the lookout for new sites to link to.

Sorry for the rant but this is crucial. The majority of people who use the Internet are not interested in politics and will not come to DU or any other political site. This kind of place is too overwhelming for the politically uninitiated. These people will vote in upcoming elections, however. And they will be influenced by what they see in the searches. If they see all this RW crap...what are they going to believe about Senator Kerry and liberals in general?

4. true, but I think television is an even bigger force
I still think people will get most of their ideas from tv--it's by far the easiest way. All you need to do is lie on your couch with a clicker in your hand. So the news pundits have the most power to persuade, or should I say indoctrinate.

5. True, and as consumers of television we can influence programming, but
on the Internet we can actually create and promote our own programs.
