Kerry in The Hill: Health insurance for every child in America (5/10)
I don't see this already posted so I thought I'd point it out...looks like amongst everything else, JK is going to be pushing for some action on the Kids First Act:

Health insurance for every child in America
By Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.)

American families put kids first every day. They work hard to give their children opportunities they never had. It’s called the American dream.

But in Washington, D.C., today, our government is making that dream almost unattainable, as 11 million children in America go without health insurance.

(snip)

Insuring every child won’t require big tax hikes or new bureaucracy. We can provide health insurance coverage for every kid in America if we simply roll back the president’s tax cut for individuals making over $300,000 a year.

Another way to look at it is that we could insure every child in America for the next 10 years for half of what it has cost us to occupy Iraq over the past three years.

(snip)

Instead of dumping the problem on cash-strapped states, my proposal offers states a new bargain: the national government will give states immediate financial relief in exchange for a commitment not only to cover all kids but to make sure they get the coverage for which they’re eligible. This will cut the red tape that results in the huge gap between the kids who are eligible and those who actually get covered.

Under my plan, states will save over $6 billion per year.

Parents deserve a new bargain, too. We should help them buy employer-sponsored coverage where available. And we will allow parents who don’t normally qualify for public programs to buy coverage for their children at cost. Parents’ side of the bargain is to take advantage of these opportunities to get their kids covered or forfeit the child tax credit on their federal tax returns.

We spent much of 2005 building our coalition of support. Now is the time to put our citizen soldiers into action. We will push for accountability on Kids First in this election year — a vote on the Senate floor that will separate those who talk about family values and those who really value families.

When it comes to getting kids healthcare coverage, it’s a promise we can afford to keep — and one we cannot afford to break. Every child deserves a healthy start in life.

I wish I could post the whole thing here...it's worth the read.

2. Please post in GD - this is a great DEFINING issue for the 2006 Dem field.
Kerry has built this meticulously and made it into a bill that Republicans will have a hard time refusing support.

4. Maybe tomorrow
I can't shepherd it tonight. Anyone else who wants to post, please do.

Believe it or not, when Kids First was getting some attention last year, there were plenty of leftier than thou types who wanted to pee all over it on dailykos. If the title of the bill isn't "Universal Health Care" believe me they will object to it.

Worst part (for those folks) is that it mandates parents to supply health insurance for kids - with the govt subsidizing low income folks of course. I struggled with that a little myself, but after all if you make affordable health care a societal / governmental responsibility, than you have to require the individual to do their part. And in this case it is only requiring it for kids, and it seems to me that it's only a matter of requiring a certain standard of care by parents for their kids.

Having studied it, I think it's a GREAT bill. But there are definitely features that will draw argument from both the left and the right.

6. On the flip side
If you mandate health insurance, then people will also demand it be affordable. It's not like car insurance where people can be told to walk. Children are here and we can't take kids away from parents over health insurance.

3. I thought this got posted
I linked it a couple days ago when I blogged about the Mother's Index released by Save the Children. I just figured it got linked in here somewhere.

I really found it particularly interesting that women in political power change the dynamics of a country so much. Sexism and racism in this country, it really shows when you look at the well-being of our babies. Obama being the only African-American in the Senate, and only the 3rd ever elected in the country, is just a disgrace. Women don't do a lot better. There has to be a better way.
