Kerry on the marriage amendment.
http://www.reformer.com/headlines/ci_3904005

Sen. John Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat who suffered when Republican voters flocked to polls featuring state-level gay marriage bans during the presidential election, called the latest move "pathetic."

"We're bogged down in Iraq with troops killed and maimed every day, we've got record gas prices here at home, and the Senate has decided the most important thing to do is debate a doomed, trumped up, divisive, ideological constitutional amendment," Kerry said in a statement. "What a disgrace."

1. That's the real point
No matter what you think about the federal marriage amendment, who can really report that it is MORE important then Iraq, the economy, immigration and like a million other issues?

I saw a report this morning that even among evangelicals, there is less focus on this issue since 2004.

Side note: Ann Coulter was on Today this morning and she claims that the country overwhelmingly supports the amendment "because it passed with 85% of the vote in Mississippi" .... didn't you know "the people" are calling for this amendment??? Then later she claimed that maybe this wasn't "really that important", which made like no sense to me, but then again it's Ann Coulter, and my ears burn everytime she speaks!!!!

2. This is about state's rights
The Republicans are the biggest hypocrites ever. The states are taking care of this, yet they still DEMAND a Federal amendment, in flagrant violation of traditional conservative values of a limited federal government. Look, I know I am ahead of the curve in that I support gay marriage. I get that I'm in the minority. But each state can deal with this on their own without a federal amendment. The religious right has shown once again how out of step they are with the Libertarian wing of the party.

This is ALL Democrats should talk about -- STATE'S RIGHTS. They should side-step the gay marriage issue since that is IRRELEVANT to the Senate debate. It's about true federalism which lets EACH STATE decide. Even people opposed to Roe v. Wade have to agree with my logic on this one. We can win this debate EASILY.

State's rights, state's rights, state's rights . . .

5. This is just so arrogant on the part of the Republicans and it shows
them up for what they really are- uncaring and power hungry. This is nothing more than an election year stunt to gain a little ground and bring out the base in November. It kicked off yesterday with all the talk shows reviewing the same talking points and Rove making a couple of appearances.
The American people should not have to put up with this crap. This nonsense is pushing aside important business and costing the tax payers' money. It's really an outrage!
I think the Dem's have to take a stand against this. All Dem's should be out in public calling this out for what it is and demanding the American public be served better.
A "war on marriage" yeah right, I feel threatened-not.
