Former POW Blasts Renewed Smear Attacks on his Vietnam Brother, John Kerry
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 10:49 PM by fedupinBushcountry
I was captured on April 20th of 1965 and released on February 12th of 1973, making me the 8the longest-held POW in Vietnam. During one period, November of 1969 till May of 1972, I was incarcerated in a camp we named "Camp Unity," part of the "Hanoi Hilton," with hundreds of my fellow POW's. During this time I shared a 40 man cell with Ken Cordier and in the adjoining cell were Paul Galanti and Jim Warner, all of whom were active in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth negative campaign. Contrary to statements by these men, none of us ever heard about John Kerry's testimony or statements against the Vietnam War while we were in captivity. I remember. I was there.

But what sustained all of us during those terrible years was our supportive brotherhood because every POW relied on his brothers for survival. This bond transcended any differences in race, rank or politics. Just before our repatriation in 1973 we formed a fraternal group, "The Fourth Allied POW Wing," also known as "Nam POWs." It was to be an apolitical and fraternal organization of those who "returned with honor."

And it wasn't until 2004 that the fraternal bond was broken and many former POW's were stunned and sickened to see a small number of our former cellmates enter the political fray with the negative Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against John Kerry. Regretfully, many of us remained silent as a multi-million dollar political smear campaign diminished and denigrated Kerry's service in Vietnam.

3. The right wing blogs
have been hot and heavy on this for days now - not sure if anyone here monitors them.
Yahoo blogs search and Google shoud pick up on this soon. It's on Technorati and if anyone has time to post it elsewhere it would be helpful. Great post from MH!

6. It's unbelievable
These lies pop up in all the searches. The liars are determined to destroy and will continue to ratchet up the lies by any, and I mean ANY, means.

4. Wow!
Fantastic post, MH!!!

I especially loved this:

Day, Cordier, Galanti and Warner have claimed to speak for most veterans and POW’s. But they only spoke for a small group of ultra right-wing ideologues. In his renewed attacks on Senator Kerry this week, Day recycles the same personal vitriol and falsehoods about Kerry’s “betrayal” of our fellow veterans that his organization trademarked in 2004.

and this:

John Kerry has continues to honorably and selflessly serve his country to this day. And I am proud, as a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, as a former Navy Light Attack carrier pilot, as a retired Navy Commander, as a Vietnam veteran and former POW, to call Senator John Kerry a Vietnam brother whom I honor and respect.

I had somehow missed knowing anything about this and I hope this will spread to the many others like me who hadn't heard Commander Butler's courageous testimony. Thanks, also, for the links to Dr. Ron's articles on the smear campaign!

7. Can you repost in GD?
This stuff is as important as it gets.

It looks like OTHER vets will take down the swifts - something the media refused to do.

8. they've always been the ones who should take this on
More than an anonymous media, more than Kerry himself. Those vets have the credibility to do it--I'm really glad this one has.

Editorial: Kerry takes up the Swift Boat charges
He deserves this opportunity to set the public record straight.

Published: June 03, 2006

SKIP

Although they had little bearing on Kerry's qualifications to be president, his young-man's sentiments on Vietnam were a legitimate issue. But that's not where it stopped. Reprising a campaign tactic that had worked well against Sen. John McCain in 2000 and Sen. Max Cleland in 2002, White House political strategist Karl Rove went straight at Kerry's most significant strength: his war record. In the following months, Kerry was accused of shooting himself to get the purple hearts; of having political plans even at that young age that fueled a cynical plot to get medals any way he could; of fabricating, lying about and exaggerating his military experiences. The tactic worked; people began to think maybe Kerry was "Unfit for Command," the title of an anti-Kerry book. Eventually, and bizarrely, people were arguing about whether Kerry took his boat into Cambodia on one occasion. To us the story sounded quite plausible (a number of Americans made clandestine trips into Cambodia during that time), as well as irrelevant to the campaign.

No candidate should have to endure what Kerry got. Some wanted him to sue, but he is a public figure, which complicates matters, and any lawsuit would have taken too long to work its way through the courts, in the meantime highlighting the accusations.

But now Kerry and a group of supporters are seeking to disprove them. Researchers are poring over naval records; Kerry has asked that his entire Navy file be released, and other veterans are giving their recollections.

We're glad Kerry is undertaking this effort. So many of the accusations hurled at him were demonstrably false on their face. It's time the record were set straight.

15. I dunno
Stuff gets buried easily on DU IMHO - while it may not get noticed here that particlar article drew a decent conversation on Dem Daily. Following that DR Ron posted around 8 or more old articles debunking the Swift Claims to boot.
