What Rep Henry Hyde (R-Dipshit) said about Sen. Kerry 6/15
It is certainly worth noting that among the shrillest voices condemning our intelligence failure are many who once devoted their efforts to weakening our intelligence capabilities, who employed their energies towards imposing restrictions, cutting budgets, sounding alarms about imaginary ``rogue elephants.''

Permit me to quote from some of the most strident critics of this administration and its campaign against the terrorists.

The first is a United States Senator now serving with great distinction in the other body. And on September 23, 2001, 12 days after the events of 9/11 this Senator stated: ``The tragedy is at this moment that the single most important weapon for the United States of America is intelligence.

``We are weakest, frankly, in that particular area. So it is going to take us time to be able to build up here to do this properly.'' You will find that on CBS's Face the Nation, September 23, 2001.

But this same Senator, in 1995, introduced a bill, S. 1290, that would have reduced the intelligence budget by $300 million in each of the fiscal years, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Son of a bitch. What an asshole.

1. I hope Kerry answers this

In 1995, one of these men was trying to get support to dry up terrorist networks financing, the other was concerned about the sex life of the President.

2. JK wanted LESS money for hardware and MORE money on HUMAN INTELLIGENCE
Any freedom-loving Republican SHOULD HAVE wanted the same. They wanted an increased budget for SPYING HARDWARE ITEMS that would only be good to use DOMESTICALLY against our own people.

4. To pay back the billion dollar slush fund

This is where the Dem Party just kills me. I don't know how they think letting these attacks slide, or worse joining in, helps create an image of military strength. They shouldn't let Hyde get away with this kind of slam just because it's against Kerry. It makes the whole party look foolish.

5. It is so frustrating. I have to believe it is coming mostly from Dem's
araid of the repubs and others who are on ego trips and don't want to give Kerry credit for anything.

I don't care who the Dem is being attacked it should be a team effort to discredit the attacks.

6. especially on something like this that perpetuates a myth
here: that the Democrats are bad on national security. They should realize that if Kerry is the candidate - this hurts. If he isn't, he would likely be one of the best national security and foreign policy surrogates (far better than gasbag Biden).

It's sad they can't even keep the partisanship down till the 2006 elections.

That said, Kerry's stand here is splitting the party. For Kerry, this is clearly a moral issue - he said so repeatedly. He can't stay quiet till the end of the year as things get worse - which is clearly what the DLC part of the party wants.
