5. Ah, Sen. Kerry
Thanking Sen. Menendez. So nice to hear civil debate.

Ahm, he looks tired, but really good.

Yeah, go get 'em Senator. Smack 'em a round a little bit. This debate is skewed. They are getting personal and hiting people about patriotism. We support our troops, we just want to give them a plan and a mission and a goal to work for.

Tired of characterizing things as they aren't. Good line.

Iraq has Al Qaeda because of the Bush War. Everyone knows this. It's just spin not to say this simple truth. The civil war is Iraqi on Iraqi.

Get angry Senator. Let it all out. I understand.

tell them why you had changes in the position. Tell them that the mistakes and incompetence dictate that a change is needed. A drastic change.

A folish consistency is indeed the hobgoblin of small minds. (Sessions, are you listening?)

This is great. I think Kerry is going to let them have it.

Yes. This is great. We believe in winning for America and for our troops. We can't win with this strategy. Bush screwed this up and the Rethugs in Congress refuse to acknowledge this.

We are enabling the hate in the Middle East. Ask the Foreign policy experts. We are creating more terrorists. We are less safe now than before the war.

Yeah, tear their argument to pieces. Tell the truth. And by the way, how dare you question my motives or patriotism. And stop lying about this amendment and what it says.

He should be President and I bet deep down more than half the people in the Senate know it. Some are Democrats who did less than they could have - or who couldn't resist talking about themselves when they were surrogates. Some Republicans likley know that, though they disagree politically, he was by far the better man in every single way.

List all the ways that the Bushies and their enablers in the Republican Congress screwed over this effort. For god sake, that ammo that is killing our troops came from the incompetence and arrogance of not assigning someone to guard the ammo dumps.

Yeah, this is good stuff.

This is part of his recent speeches. I'm glad it will be in the Congressional record. This is good stuff.

You Saw the horror and waste of war up close. Most of the Rethugs have not. Bring this in, it is right to do so. These chicken-hawks are so quick to send others to war. They need to hear from someone who knows something of what the cost of these rash actions is.

Thanks Senator. By the way, no matter how many votes you get on this, you are morally right to do this.

53. Final words (with a bit of paraphrasing)
There are occassions when a generation faces a struggle between good and evil. There is good and there is evil in this world. What radical extremists are doing in the name of religion is evil. But we have to stand up to evil in the best traditions of our country. We have to stand up to evil in a way that we bring people to our side. It's a failure in our policy and it's a failure that makes the United States less secure, not more secure. The bottomline is they aren't waiting for anything today ...they're not waiting now. Unless we resolve these issues, this will continue and this will get worse.

In a moment of ideological excess, this administration has managed to destroy the cradle of civilization.

Why no EU involvement? Because the EU has no faith in this Admin or the course they have laid out. Yeah this is an imposing amendment that seeks to tell the President what to do. That's because he has no direction.

Iran is the winner in all this.

Nice back and forth.

Any of what he said in this debate can be taken in isolation and attacked by the right or the left.

Also the very fact that he had the debate showed a lot of respect. This is a bill that Kerry introduced to push the issue. He knew that he didn't even have half the Democrats. This may be among the kindest things anyone did towards Kerry today. He also did see some good in what Kerry said - though he fundamentally disagrees with a time table.

Contrast with Sessions now.

and feels bad about what McConnell/Frist did last week. His comments on Kerry's Silver Star are just wonderful. (Tears.)

Warner is at least sincere in his desire to have Iraq be more stable before the troops are drawn down. This is so unlike the Rethugs who just want to slap down the opposition.

He questioned the EU's willingness to come into the fight and then cited the British as strong allies. Ahm, the British people are not happy about this war. Tony Blair is in deep trouble and won't be PM much longer. We will soon be alone.

So which is it? Are we screwed and can't get anyone to come into a coalition or do we have allies?
