I still hate Joe Klein
http://www.time.com/time/columnist/klein/article/0,9565,1205323,00.html

Back home, Karl Rove was officially unindicted in the cia leak case, and the Democrats were busy being Democrats—divided, defensive and confused about the war, with Bush's favorite punching bag, Senator John Kerry, leading the charge.

Kerry gave an eloquent speech to a group of left-liberal activists on the day of Bush's Baghdad trip. "It is not enough to argue with the logistics ... or the manner of the conflict's execution or the failures of competence, as great as they are," Kerry said, to wild cheers. "It's essential to acknowledge that the war itself was a mistake." It was an appropriate act of contrition, but then—as is his awkward wont—Kerry overreacted and called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by the end of the year. It was a proposition that garnered all of six votes on the Senate floor when Senate Republicans gleefully submitted Kerry's idea to a vote later in the week.

snip

What can the Democrats do? They can play politics or be responsible. The political option is to embrace "cut and run"; call for an immediate withdrawal, as Kerry did; and hope the public is so sick of Bush and sick of the war that it will punish the g.o.p. in the fall. But embracing defeat is a risky political strategy, especially for a party not known for its warrior ethic. In fact, the responsible path is the Democrats' only politically plausible choice: they will have to give yet another new Iraqi government one last shot to succeed. This time, U.S. military sources say, the measure of success is simple: Operation Forward Together, the massive joint military effort launched last week to finally try to secure Baghdad, has to work. If Baghdad isn't stabilized, the war is lost. "I know it's the cliche of the war," an Army counterinsurgency specialist told me last week. "But we'll know in the next six months—and this time, it'll be the last next six months we get."

1. Think Clinton. I have this pee wee on ignore. He ain't worth the time.
He has issues with Kerry and will always have a problem with anything he does. I mean really, didn't it occur to Klein, that the speech and this amendment were well planned in advance and not just concocted after his warm reception at the TBA conference. Oh, sure, Kerry can whip together a detailed articulate binding amendment in a weeks time. While I know he is a Superman I doubt he would want to be so haphazard with something so important.

2. If this is the last six months
Then doesn't it stand to reason we ought to start making it clear that it's the last six months and that the only way to do that is to start pulling our troops out so the Iraqis see that they have to get behind their government. And if this is the last six months, then we should be able to get out if they succeed, and have to get out if they fail. I don't see how somebody can write that and not come to the logical conclusion on the sensible path forward for our troops.

And I'd choose sensible, seasoned warrior over blustering blundering warrior any day of the weak.

3. What 's amazing is that Kerry/Feingold
is likely the only well articulated plan out there. Bush may have a plan, but he's notsharing it. The Levin amendment simply calls for a plan.

Kerry and Feingold could have gotten the same political response just putting out a resolution that said withdraw at some date. Kerry and Feingold hopefully will be able to make people know. (I wonder if Warner's recognition that this was a serious effort led to his respect and kindness.) In retrospect, it is extremely annoying that the leadership pushed a fluffy amendment instead.

It's interesting that Kerry is getting the brunt of the critisism and Feingold is ignored.

6. Truth-be-told I think a lot of Dem Party people / consultants

deserve the blame for it. They are sore losers and they are spouting their arrogant attitude all over town and have been since 2004 ... and it's getting back to the journalists and they are writing about it.

7. Feingold has a measure of popularity on the left but he's not as
much of a threat as Kerry is.
