How much doesn't DU-Gen Discussion understand about mental illness?
Edited on Tue Sep-06-11 11:51 AM by HereSince1628
Apparently THIS much:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1879101&mesg_id=1879101

That forum has no trouble with its denisons calling people crazy or nuts, but when a published report suggests mental illness is common, and that anxiety and insomnia, for example, could be mental illness...

Wow! They object--Strenuously!!!11!!

What was that you said about denial, Sigmund? Hahahahahahah!

1. This might sound strange
but I think this place is actually becoming more sensitive to mental health issues. That thread is a mess, but looking at it I can see what looks to be a third of the responses siding with us here in this group, and also a few that are kind of half way there. I think that's a big improvement compared to when I started posting here about the issue in 2004. I guess that's kind of sad, but, hey, it's progress! :D

I should probably also say that one thread doesn't make a trend. It could just be that the conspiracy theorists haven't found that particular thread yet.

3. Yes, well, I can't speak to attitudes of new mods, the point is GD can dish it out; but ,
the idea that mental illness could capture their own behaviors 'creeeped' many of them out so much that they fled to the same level of denial that Rick Perry manifests about global warming and evolution. It was remarkable, hence my remark.
