I have a question about our posts.

And that is, if we're posting something that involves violence (self-harm, suicidal thinking, that kind of thing :(

I'd like to ask for a small flag in the subject line. It really doesn't matter what, but -- you know how we have good days and vulnerable days.

It just seems like on vulnerable days, we could see the flag in the subject line and decide whether to read right away or, wait until we're more steady.

Whaddya think?

you mean make it a rule or something? If somebody is going to post that, I don't think we should legislate how they do it. They might choose not to do it, and then we might miss an opportunity to support them.

could you explain more about why you chose to post this?

Just from my experience on lists with folks that are trying to change patterns -- like self harming of any kind, they've found it helpful if posts with self-harming talk were flagged in some way.

Like putting (sh) in the subject line. That way, for example, if I was having a wobbly day, I'd have a heads up and might not read it that day. But on getting steadier, I could respond to the post rather than react to it.

Does that make sense? It's not like a scarlet letter. It's just a small signal.

4. I don't think this is necessarily a bad idea.

As someone who posts threads that (sadly) frequently
deal with such topics I can understand myriad reasons
for wanting such a warning:

people with weak stomachs, people who are recovering
from certain things that they don't want to deal with at this
time, or people who are easily triggered into certain
activities (cutting, suicidal thoughts etc.) by the mention
of certain things.

Maybe we can just try to get people to make their
thread titles a little bit more specific in that area.

I promise I will try and do so.

9. The way this has been done for years on BP boards is "trigger"

Which generally indicates an intense (and for BP's, intense is- well- let's just say more intense than average) emotional topic or something involving SI (self-injury) or potentially dark thoughts, etc.

If you think something is likely to trigger an adverse reaction in someone, a notation like trigger or <trigger> might be appropriate.

Just a thought.

10. Thanks, I didn't know that but it makes sense

I just know some days, I can read anything and others, not. And, come to think of it, a notation like that is a cue for me to do a "self check" -- which is pretty helpful, all by itself.
