can someone recommend some good book(s) on the French Revolution.

1. A good starter book is....
..."French Revolution/Napoleonic Era" by Owen Connelly...
..and then progress to "Citizens" by Simon Schama.

You'll enjoy them both!

Outstanding! A good read, in the sense of being exquisitely detailed.

BTW, you'll find a parallel to $hrub and the Neocons in the beginning. The French kings nearly bankrupted the nation building the 18th-century equivalent of SDI.

This was a network of massive wooden "floating fortresses" anchored off the strategically important French ports and harbors. A massive boondoggle that never worked, for what should have been pretty obvious reasons. The things broke their moorings, eventually rotted, etc. etc.

And what finally helped to push the economy over the edge was the massive Foreign Aid the French contributed to the American Revolution. I think about that every time I stick my nose into Free Republic...which isn't often.
