1. I had a Schubert marathon yesterday at work.
I listened to his symphonies #s 3,4 ,5 ,6 8 & 9 (Abbado leading the Chamber Orchestra of Europe). Great stuff.

2. I love the string quartets- the post was prompted
by the 2nd mvt. of the Death and the Maiden quartet. It's absolutely my favorite quartet of all time.

3. I probably have to go with Beethoven's Op 132 in a minor
as my all-time favorite string quartet.

4. I like the Beethoven quartets- I can't recall that one off the top
of my head. I'll have to give it a listen when I get home.

8. Nearly ten years ago now
I went to a concert at Hancher in Iowa City and saw Isaac Stern, Jaimie Laredo, Violist? Trampler?, Yo yo Ma and Susan Schroeder ?(other cellist)

Billed as the Dream Ensemble.... It was one of the chamber concerts I've ever seen. They did the C major Quintet and the 2nd movement was taken with such care and length - It was hard to imagine without hearing it.

That piece and Dvorak's A major Piano Quintet are in my top 10 pieces of all time.

10. Could the other cellist have been Sharon Robinson?
She's married to Laredo, and they often perform together.

Laredo is, in my opinion, one of the best violinists out there. Perlman's got the big name; but I'd rather see Laredo.

7. The Piano Trios....
are incredibly beautiful. The second movement of trio #2 is one of those pieces of music that once you've heard it ,you'll never forget it. It stays with you forever. I love all Schubert chamber music. However I find his orchestral music somewhat flat and uninspiring, except for the Unfinished Symphony which is as good as it gets. It seems as if he was just hitting his stride with orchestral composing when he passed. Imagine the masterpieces he would probably go on to compose if he'd had more time on planet Earth.

9. Schubert definitely one of my 3 favorite composers
My favorite is the Quintet in A Major, “Trout” - Op. 114. Love his 9th symphony.
