My first Katrina photos are posted in GD.
I'll post more here later, but I wanted to get something posted immediately to spead the word of the damage. Here's the link:

Please nominate it if you think it's any good. I really want people to know how bad it continues to be down there.

2. Welcome home!
I am sure you are still decompressing from being around all that destruction. That is how I was after Jeanne and Frances hit my town in FL last year, and this year when I went to help with Katrina. Take good care of you! I'm going to look at your pics and probably have a good cry myself now.

Hugs,
Bella

5. Funny you should mention Jeanne.
I met this totally random woman on the airport shuttle in Houston who was homeless for 4 months after Jeanne. She told me she didn't want to talk about it, but she still felt compelled to offer the info up without my asking. We had hurricanes in Massachusetts, but nothing like what the South gets.

Thanks for your good thoughts for my mental health!

3. That's a great photo essay, ITF.
I know it must have been terribly draining for you being down there -- I can't even imagine how awful it is for the residents.

4. It was terribly draining!
But very rewarding! Now I'm trying to figure out how I can get back down there to work some more. I feel so useless, unemployed in Denver. At least I know I could do some good in Mississippi. *sigh*

of course you are nominated.

If you don't mind can I share this with my family via e-mail?
My eyes are leaking and once again my heart is aching. What a great way to display your talent with such truthful words and heartfelt emotion.

10. Good work, good works.
To me, photography is about the human condition, how we see and what we see around and within us. And it is because of this that the most memorable and moving images come through documentary work. You and Raging have both told the story of that hurricane and the responses in GD show how well you have communicated.

13. Did Raging also post a thread w/hurricane photos?
I feel like I've been so disconnected these last few weeks, which of course I literally have been. If he did, I'll have to do a search and find the thread. He shoots so well, I'd love to see what he posted.

And thanks for the praise. I like your description of photography being about the human condition, and the power of documentary shots. It was the images of Vietnam broadcast on the nightly news (for instance) that brought about the end of that conflict, a lesson not lost on the current administration in our current conflict. It was the images of African American school children shot with fire hoses and attacked by police dogs that caused tide to turn in favor of ending segregation, and similar images from Abu Ghraib have been suppressed. It is what drives me to document every protest and justice-seeking experience I engage in, although God knows I'd rather live in a world where I only felt the need to take landscapes and puppy pictures.

14. Yeah, well, that's 22 photos out of the 420 or so that I shot.
Anyone would be bound to get some decent shots with that ratio. Thanks for the welcome back.

15. Excellent collage. Thanks for the Mississippi shots.
I'll be heading over to Gulfport, Bay St Louis,, and Waveland 12/27. Will bring the digital camera to show how much "progress" our "world class" technology and services have done for the affected areas and people. Maybe I'll even videotape it if I find something really worth recording to dvd.
