“HOLIDAY LIGHTS” Submission Thread
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 11:20 AM by F.Gordon
First. Does anyone want to volunteer to "host" this thing? I’ve got a bunch of crap going on right now so it’d be difficult for me. "Hosting" would basically just mean posting the following link in the Lounge. …

http://photogroup.smugmug.com/gallery/1030135

Should probably wait till after the weekend to start the Lounge thread. Give everyone, including myself, a chance to come up with some photos. Or.... could start it sooner and then just add the photos to the gallery as they come in. Whatever everyone thinks. There are no hard "rules" here.

You can submit your "Holiday Lights" photos one of two ways. You can post then in this thread….. or...if you have the secret decoder ring you can upload them directly into this gallery. If you don't have the secret decoder ring you can PM me to get it but I'm not online that frequently right now so be patient if you don't hear back from me.

Before you post your “Holiday Lights” photos you need to read the Contest License. It’s the only thing that applies with this challenge. Again. This is just for fun. No voting.

Edit? What else. Jumbled words. Wrong Words. All those things that happen due to lack of an inadequate dose of caffeine.

1. Sure. I think I can host it.
Does not sound too tough.

PM me with details, secret codes, key rings, and whatever other paraphernalia I may need.

2. Hey. THANKS!!!
Will do. Send ya' all the important stuff you will need including the special Tights and Cape you need to wear. What size are you?

I posted a couple of my drive-by cheater snapshots. Taken from the warmth of the car, handheld, using a very high ISO. Need to try to get some proper like snaps using a tripod and a low ISO. Hopefully this weekend. Until then.. just a couple to start things.... (click on link)

3. Here's my first try at night time photography with a
digital. I messed around with .8 to 2. sec exposure. Film is still superior.

I have others I might show.

4. Not bad. And yes, for work like this
film is still far superior.
I am considering taking a shot with each, just for comparison sake.

Of course, I am not at the high end of digital right now... Sony 717

5. Thanks. The artifacts weren't as bad as I thought they would
be. The other ones had brighter lights and shorter exposure time.

6. Here's some shots!
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 12:39 AM by bvar22
Thought I would kick this thread by spamming it with some photos.
We had a neat snow storm the last couple of days. It was unusual for St Paul. It is usually so cold here that the snow is like talcum powder. You can't even make a snowball. This storm started out wet (28-32 degrees), no wind, steady light snow for 2 days, then the temp dropped to single digits. The snow clumped up and stuck to the bushes and trees making for some good pictures.

Finally got out tonight to take some pictures. I almost deployed the chainsaw to modify someone's front yard so I could get the picture I wanted. Luckily, I stopped drinking a few years ago, so better judgement prevailed.

I'm working on a couple of other shots that I will submit for the "challenge" this weekend. I'm still using the old camera (Olympus C-750UZ). I may wait until after the New year to order the new one.

Merry Christmas
or
Happy Holidays everyone!
(Choose One. I don't care.)

8. Those are beautiful
with the snow like that. Hard to pick a favorite though #5 looks like it was pulled off a Christmas card.

9. I really like the perspective of that last shot.
Cold, blue and snowy outside, warmly lit and warm welcome inside. That's a very evocative photo!

7. I finally got some
Christmas light pics. Put most of them on the smugmug page. (Yippie, I remembered where I put the secret code and all)
Will put one here too.

You will have to go to the smugmug page to see the Mr. Potato Head lights though.

Very cool with the moon. Downright solstice-y! :) I'll have to check out the smugbug page.

the actual full moon, but I don't drive on ice. We had ice storms for it and couldn't see it for the clouds.
Here is the moon a bit earlier, and yes it was this color. But the Christmas lights were just a bit far
and not so good. Now if only the moon had still been orange by that tree.

13. Great pic Raging
I love the way they palms are lit. We need more southern Christmas lights since you don't have to freeze to get them.

lights pictures on the Smugmug site.

Not sure why one would keep their boat in the water WJMS but they do it here too. And lots light
the boats up for the holidays. Too damn cold to be on the water IMHO. My question is why do the super
religious always seem to over do it so that it is hard to get beyond the tacky. At least the GBA one put their
stuff up straight. The pics are great. Now everyone knows why I don't decorate the outside of my house. Too picky.

Love the Gilpin Hotel shot, wanna go take pics of the Stanley Hotel for me? Never saw it decked out
for Christmas. If they went subtle and old fashioned it would be beautiful. Kidding about you going
though I might have to go see if Estes Park has any pics on their site.

Alfredo has a great pic of a tastefully decorated house in there too.

Great pics so far and makes me want to go out in the cold and take more pics, now only to find the time.

15. This is tough
My last "window of opportunity" was last night and a light snow and cold temps kept me from going to the Denver Zoo with tripod. So..... I drove around for about 1 1/2 hours and did more high ISO drivebys. I'll try to go through and upload a few more before I take a break from snapshots to take care of this and that.

Filter (which I had to use to protect lens) created flares. Streetlights. Cars and Trucks in the shot. Seemed like there was slim-pickins' round these parts this year. Few lights. And it was friggin' hard to come up with anything "interesting".

The entries so far are awesome. Some real "post card" type shots. I uploaded everything to date (I think).

Take it away WannaJumpMyScooter!!!!!
