Suggestion for the contest this month
Do you think we could split the contest into two categories -- "macros" those shot with macro lenses -- and "close ups" those shot without macro lenses? I think it would make the contest more fair, and give the Lounge folks a view of what lenses versus no lense can do.

1. Your camera will focus down to 1.6 inches
That's as good as any dedicated macro lens on these check-book suckin' cameras. I understand what you're sayin' though. It's frustrating if you haven't done much with the macro. If you were closer I'd help ya' out cause you have a very good camera. I grabbed my Nikon 950 (your camera is far better) point & shoot and cracked off this snap in macro mode just for grins. It's hand held, no crop.. right out of the camera. I do have this $3.00 table top tripod I bought at a job lots store that I should have used....

Oops.... that reminds me.... I have to go buy some friggin' 2 cent stamps
:grr:

I still like the "Piano Keys" shot you took.
:hi:

If you have a question post it... I'll "try" to help you. And if I can't I'm sure someone else can. Just don't put so much pressure on yourself. First rule of photography... HAVE FUN!!!

2. One of your shots will be fine, RadFem

Mine isn't all that "macro" either, but it's close and that's good enough for me.

3. I think your photos qualify as 'macro'...
... so to divide the category into "macro" and "close up", yours would still be macro. Also, I don't think judging is going to be based on how "close" to something you get... its more about artistic value (form and function), and maybe a little creativity bonus.

Keep practicing your macro shots, you'll soon LOVE them!

Here I was "screwing" around with my camera's macro settings....

5. I like that
And are you using the "Frosty the Snowman" photoshop filter on that?

Agree... once you get past the boring techno-mumbo-jumbo in figurin' out how to do this stuff... it's a lot of fun. No limit on how creative you can get.

4. My bad. I "read" too much into your OP
I suppose you could plead your case to mogster but I see the potential for some confusion in determining what is a "macro" and what is a "close up". If I enter a snap in this contest the one that I'm leaning toward looks like a closeup but it's actually a macro. I could enter it in either category.

Also, it's a well known fact that this group is haunted. I'm fearful that if we start messin' with the contest and dividing it into different categories that people will start..... disappearing.

:scared:

6. I think we just run as proposed in the original thread
Categories tend to confuse people ;-)
And I'm not sure how the voting should be then.

My suggestion for contest name is 'Close up photo (Macro)', which covers both.
But I'm of courze willing to lizten to rezon, as long az ve haff order in zhe ranks when we march! *toothbrush moustache* :puffpiece:

The submission thread goes up later today (it's 6 o-clock in the evening here), so we have time for a quick banter about this.

8. My quick banter......
No Bugs
No Flowers
No Snowflakes
No Screws

Has to be "Stuff you'd find in the F'Troop House" only. Just so you know ye Master of the Contest I gave everyone the opportunity to stop by my house but no one showed up. I was even going to make pigs in a blanket and serve Dr. Pepper.

7. Oh, I forgot
Great photos y'all! :toast:

I've followed the debate here without commenting too much, and there are many kick-ass photos in the threads which title contains the word 'macro'. I don't count myself as a good photographer, although I've taken a lot of photos since 1985, and seen even more. The keywords for me has always been 'intention' and 'motive' (not tech); which means that the photo is taken with an intention of describing something and the motive builds on that intention. I think 'objects in close up' should be the intention - it was a bit unfortunate to use the word macro, as it excludes some people from participating by not having the right equipment. It wasn't my intention to send you out on expensive lens shopping sprees :D
(Well, to be honest you voted for it, so maybe it was your intention, folks. Hmmm... )

I have some other suggestions, if I may:
- add some information to each photo in the voting threads, like cam/lens info. This may clutter the 'effect' of the photos (just title and photo is prettier), so we might think a bit about that. Maybe post a quick answer to the thread with each photo title listed with the tech data below? Your OP has a good point, RadFemFL - people would like to learn more about macro lenses, and the equipment used on each photo.
- kick, but not vote the three semi-finals starting threads, then kick and vote the final to the greatest.
- make a honor-thread with the winner photo alone and collect all info about the contest as links below to sum up the contest, to make a future reference thread. And kick and vote it to the greatest. I hope I'm not breaking the DU rules here by arranging voting campaigns :D But the DU could use some more art, and people like to look at photos. As long as we don't overdo it, just two threads will go to greatest.
- maybe also post links to previous contests in the honor-thread, an overview of the group's earlier contests would be nice, and would perhaps get more people to the group

Hit me! :-)
