So, are point & shoot users allowed in this joint?
Lot of fancy work here. Haven't really owned an SLR since my Canon A-1 & AE-1 back in the eighties. I did buy a Pentax K1000 at a thrift store for $2.00 a few months ago & I've been having fun playing with it.

Really though, I only use a Nikon Coolpix L2 & an Aiptek MPVR (these days, mostly for quick records from TV, as a voice recorder & MP3 player and for quick shots).

Looks kind of intimidating here, maybe I'll just lurk for a bit heheh :hi:

1. Not only are point and shoots allowed
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 09:18 PM by CC
they are welcome. The camera itself is only a tool, it is the eye behind the camera that makes a pic more than a snap shot. This is a great place to get information, feedback and ideas no matter what kind of camera you have. So welcome to the photo group and don't let the equipment get in the way.

5. Now for the warning, we are a greedy
group, the more pics you post the more we want. Also there is camera envy and lens lust but it seems to hit when a new bigger badder whatever comes out. That hits whether you have a $10 cheap older Russian light leaker or a camera that cost as much as a luxury car. I saw a gallery show of pics done with light leaking cheaper Russian camera last year, beautiful photos. Was the guys hobby.

2. Absolutely!
Many of the pictures I post were made with my non-DSLR Olympus C-7070.

10. qnr, I didn't want to respond until I went thru your Flickr photos
You have some good stuff there. I especially liked p1010108 and p1010109. 2005dec22 019 is also great (I'd like to see a B&W version - it would work well).

I'd rather see a good photograph taken with a point & shoot than a lifeless snap taken with the latest titanium-plated, nuclear-powered, mega-expensive DSLR. As CC said upthread, the camera's just a tool. Things only get bogged down if the person using the camera is also a tool. But enough about me...

Keep shooting, and post some stuff. With the Kennebec in your backyard, how can you go wrong?

Besides, this here's the best bunch of people on DU.:grouphug:

11. Thanks. I'm trying to get things organized. I default to private most of
the time (except for the last couple of days) - so I have to go through everything and see what should be made public.

Well, from what I've seen by browsing the group, I'd say your opinion is well-justified, regarding the people here.

13. I was looking at some of your photos - nice :) ... I used to love
photography, though I never really went beyond the advanced amateur level. I lucked out and had the opportunity to visit all 50 states & all 7 continents, and took advantage of it. However, I pretty much gave up on it when my entire collection, including negatives, was stolen during a move. Just now starting in again. I'd forgotten how much fun it is.

I can see I'll be learning a lot too.

Thanks for your comment. I think I might have a problem where too many things look interesting to me. I guess that is one advantage of not having to use film (at the moment), I can shoot whatever I like for the cost of some electricity.

I really agree with your point, I am starting to look for and see a lot more.

14. A camera by any other name is still.....

I always keep a few cheap fuji and kodak one-shots around and I always take one with me when I go out to snap a few pics.

You do something that most people that own a camera don't. You use the friggin' thing. And you just don't use it... you take the time to look for an interesting photo. I make this observation by skimming through your large gallery of excellent photos in flick.

When my sister visited recently I told her to bring her camera. A sony point & shoot. She's had it for about 2-3 years and I've always been pressing her to start using it more. Her frustration, and I think the frustration of many people, is that she didn't know how to use the friggin' thing. We spent a couple of evenings with me figuring out the camera and her reading the manual then went out and I showed her how to do different things with it.

She's now using it all the time and is even taking classes at a local community college. She travels quite a bit, being a big muk-a-muk with the VA, and I just got an email from her. Up in the Black Hills area right now and she's anxious to show me all the pics she's taken. And I being very anxious to see them.....

In another thread I mentioned someone who used a Fuji point & shoot. This is a woman I meet from time to time in my regular life "doin's". She's had a rough go of it lately so we talk... actually I just listen. But we started talking about photography. I sent her to a couple of my personal online galleries and I think she probably thought... "shit, this guy is horrible... I can do better than that".

Actually, I convinced her to start using the camera more. The last time I met her she came over to me with a big grin on her face and a large album of photos she took when she went to Tennesee. We spent a considerable amount of time going through them. I think I was more excited than she was.

What's the point to all of this? "That F.Gordon needs to cut back on the coffee...."
:P

No. Well, yes.. but No.

Photography can be a great way to slow down.. relax.. (smell the flowers kinda' thing) take a look at the things around you. You'd be amazed what I "see" now that I never "saw" before. It's better than Zoloft.

Ok, YES, it was the coffee. To answer your question... frug' YEA!!
:hi:

Us? Really? You obviously don't know us--or know how much many of us have improved just by hanging out here. We don't bite. We will give you oodles of positive, constructive feedback. We don't care what you shoot with, only that you come and play with us. Some of us are a little eccentric, but really, that's about as bad as it ever gets here. Welcome! :hi:

Don't be intimidated, I am still learning how to use my Canon digital camera, folks here are really patient and very helpful. Even though I've been taking pictures since 1972, I certainly do not consider myself an expert, by any means. I have alot to learn!

24. I thought all cameras were "Point & Shoot"
No....Seriously folks...take my wife......

A word of caution:
When I joined this forum, I was using a "Point & Shoot", carried it carelessly in a pocket, and I loved every picture I took. :)

NOW, I spend most of my disposable time & money feeding my new obsession (a new SLR), and none of my pix are perfect. :(

Beware.
Welcome to the Photography Group! :toast:

26. To take a picture, one must point, and one must shoot.
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 09:31 PM by Gregorian
I often feel a slight twinge of guilt when I read that phrase.

But here's something out of this month's popular photog. There are a hundred different things to think about when taking a shot. After years of experience, some people can take a shot without thinking about them too much. But even so, there are times when perhaps only a brief moment goes by when the shot is allowed. A ride up an escalator. A passing train. Maybe you can frame it. Maybe you can try to lose a head rather than a foot. Maybe even you can get the exposure how you want it. But your timing might not be perfect.

Sometimes you have to point and shoot.

I think there are photographs that tell a story. The technique is not the message. And a cellphone camera works. I've seen cellphone photos that awed me.

If you think point and shoot is worthy of guilt, I still won't let myself fire off five frames per second in order to capture that perfect one.

27. I've missed many good shots.....
...because I didn't reset my camera to "Point & Shoot" mode after using "special" settings.

Those surprise, once-in-a-lifetime shots come when least expected. Swinging up the camera and pulling the trigger while in Manual Focus/ Manual Exposure usually produces a blurry mess.

Oh, the pictures I have missed....

28. I feel no guilt about it. Humor sometimes, when I use an old tripod and
you can barely see the camera, but no guilt. :hi:
