*****The October Contest Topic is PATHS/PATHWAYS *****
"Paths/Pathways" narrowly edges out "Surrealism" by a vote of 9-8. (Although, with such a close result, I guess anyone wanting to cover all their bases could try to do a "Surreal Pathway" image.)

Submissions start on the 15th, so start shooting and/or combing your photo files!

even though I voted for it. (Not sure why.) RegnaD kciN, I may give you a submission before we leave for NOLA/Biloxi because we will be on the road the 15th. Will that work?

Blue, you are not alone, I was not gettin' that surrealism thing either. All I could think of was Marc Chagall.

6. I think I have one from 1969 when I was at Ft Jesus in Mombasa.
It is the passageway from the dungeons of Fort Jesus to the docks. This was the passageway where the slaves were taken to the ships.

8. If interested in submitting a photo
what are the procedures?

I'm thinking about doing more photography (mostly my camera sits in the closet) and thought working on the contests would help improve my pics, both content and tech wise.

Thanks!

9. Easy. Watch for regnaD kciN
to post a "submit your picture" thread on the 15th. Then just post one using PhotoBucket or some other picture-hosting site. When he gets 30 entries or at the end of a specified period of time, he'll divided the submissions into three polls and post them in the Lounge. After a reasonable amount of time the top 10 are picked for the final poll. The "winner" gets to host the next month's contest.

We'd love to have you join in.

10. I'm gonna take a risk and submit one.
I just got my camera and spend all my time shooting pics. Of course, I'm in an area that is easy to get some great photos.

11. Don't be shy...!
Every month, we have first-timers enter the contest. More than a few wind up making the finals their first time, and I can think of at least one or two who have won with their first entry.

Also, since you're in New Hampshire, make sure you have an image ready for the "Scenes of Autumn" seasonal contest beginning on November 1st.

14. Not sure about this but I'll give it a try. Are there any "rules"? Do
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 11:21 AM by WePurrsevere
photos have to be brand new or can they be older?

Is there a set size? Since I use my camera for taking auction pics I tend to have a tendency to often leave the camera set at a lower res and size setting.

Is using a photo editor/shop programs to adjust contrast etc okay?

Does the Path/Pathway have to e what one traditionally thinks of or can it be something a bit unique/symbolic?

Although I consider a road a type of path is that acceptable for this contest?

Thanks in advance. :)

(edited for a missed "b"... need a new keyboard)

15. Some answers...
Older ones are okay.

Size - we just like it to fit on most people's screens. I think there's some size definitions somewhere, but as long as it's not hugh :) it's fine.

Photo editing is okay, within reason.

Symbolic/unique is okay.

As for the road, I'm not sure. regnaD kciN will have to weigh in on that one.

16. Thank you. :-) I'll await regnaD kciN's input on the "road"...
One of the photos I'm thinking of is a rather nice picture with an old and very over grown road (I call it "The Road Less Traveled") that's on our property that we occasionally drive our car on to see the view from the top.

I don't do hugh. ;) As a very pokey dial up user I avoid using large pictures online. It's also one of the major lessons I learned buying and selling on ebay, keep pictures large enough to see and small enough to have a quick load time or the back button may be used and a sale lost.

The most difficult thing for me will be deciding which one to enter. :)

Thanks again. B-)

18. Gee, thanks a lot...
After consideration, my answer would be  .

After further consideration, I would say the following:

Paths can be of any material, dirt, grass, gravel, bricks, etc. Even asphalt. A road can be a path, but not all roads are paths. To qualify as a path, a road (of whatever substance) needs to meet the following somewhat-paradoxical criteria:

1) There is a destination which can be shown, hinted at, or deliberately hidden, but which is clearly not the same as where the picture was taken. (A shot of a road lined with suburban strip malls as far as the eye can see is not a path, since all it leads to is "more of the same.")

2) Conversely, the path must have something special about the immediate area of the photo that makes the path important, not just the destination. (A shot of the highway from L.A. to Las Vegas, where all you see is a highway cutting through the sand with the "Strip" in the far distance, is likewise not a path, since the only point of interest in the photo is the destination, with nothing noticeable about the immediate surroundings themselves.)

That probably confuses things more than it clarifies them, but I think the essence is clear -- while roads, per se are not forbidden, you should make extra sure that any image whose "path" is a modern paved roadway meets the criteria above.

Does that help any?

19. Thank you that does help a bit (that's one "no"). :-) Another 2 ?s though
could the "material" be water (like a river/creek, etc) or water vapor (like a mist/fog) if it appears to look like a path or symbolizes a path to some? (Hence my earlier question... since now that you posted the above definition I'm unsure if two I have would be okay or if I should save them for another day. :) Maybe it would be easier if I just posted the photos I'm considering?

Also... what is a good way to protect the photos that won't detract from them? I know about watermarks although: a) most I've seen detract b) I don't have a program to do them and c) we can't afford one at this time. Usually I've just been hiding my name somewhere in the picture and hoping for the best or merely hoping no one will steal them.

Thanks again. :)

23. Yes to your first question...
...it could be water (in whatever form) or a symbolized path.

Posting your photos would be a good idea. "Help me pick my entry" polls have become a staple in this group, and can help you get valuable feedback. Since there are another few days before the submission period, I would recommend you consider a poll.

Finally, although I put a copyright notice in the EXIF data, I don't watermark the photos I put up here (although, ironically, I do so on my web site -- possibly to show potential purchasers that "I mean business?"). I just make sure the image is of a small enough size (640-800 pixels in the longest dimension) that it would be of little use to anyone except for putting on a website -- which is not where the money is when it comes to selling stock images.

20. Well, if we want to get esoterical about this theme
There are several 'paths' that are not physical in nature, but can be represented by a photograph...

Path to destruction
Path to salvation
Path to success
Path to enlightenment
Path to equality
Path to understanding
Path to chaos

etc...

22. I think it would...
...whereas, for example, I'm not sure this one (one of mine) would. The road's too wide and straight to qualify as a "path," and the main interest of the image is in the clouds, not the path or its implied destination.
