Digital photographers only . . . what do you use to set white balance?
Do you just use auto settings, a grey card, what is your preference?

1. It depends on if I have the time. If I am at an event, I set it
on AWB (Auto). Otherwise I set the WB using the settings provided.

2. Generally auto...
but will use manual settings when appropriate. Most of my photography is outdoors where Olympus' auto setting works well. If conditions are mostly cloudy, I'll set an appropriate 6500K white balance.

I have yet to use a quick-reference white balance with a white card, and have done pretty well overall.

If I were shooting under fluorescent lighting, I would use manual white balance.

3. I used to fuss with it, but discovered that the auto
setting is smarter, faster, and better than I ever hope to have time to become.

4. For a while I carried a white card
but I found that Nikons pre-set WBs work fine 90%, and Nikon Capture Editor works for the rest.

Shooting RAW is probably more important than perfect white balance on the camera.

5. But using Nikon Capture requires me to spend another $100
I don't have :(.

6. Yes, it hurts.
I had to decide between upgrading from PhotoShop elements 2 to 3, or
going with the Editor.

For the D70, I think I made the right decision, because RAW is where it's at, baby!

I tend to be frugal with lenses. Most of mine are old AI and AI'd lenses. But I have found that time is kind to lenses. Since I intend to shoot in the field for a week or so, I built a Personal Storage Device from a Look PSD kit, and a used drive.

NCE uses the NEF file to record changes to the image. PS uses a sidecar file. I like the Nikon approach better. It is the most useful CNote I dropped on a post process product.

If I can get a bit of money ahead, I am considering getting the non demo version of NeatImage. Great App!

7. 90% of the time I let the camera adjust it automatically

The one exception is taking night shots under yellow/orange street lights, then I sometimes set it manually, but even that can cause problems. Note the blueish tint on the right where whiter streetlights were used, and scattered throughout the picture where white lights were used. I didn't notice any of this when I was taking the picture!
