Time frame for May contest (not a submissions thread)
After what must have been one of the most dramatic contest finishes in recent memory, Light and Shadows pulled ahead at the very end of long race, edging out May Flowers despite a valiant come from behind effort by the second place finisher.

Wheww!

So, here's the schedule I propose.

1. The contest will open around midday on Sunday 5/15, run through the next weekend and be closed on Monday evening (Pacific time) 5/23. The idea is to give any whose online time is limited to weekends a couple chances to enter, but to wait to begin the submissions process so people have a chance to think over their options before the contest opens.

2. If there are over 30 entries, only the first 30 will qualify, and if the contest yields less than 30

3. A few days later (depending on how long it takes me) I'll divide the entries into Stage I polls, based on submission order, which will also run a few days - ideally ThursAM-MonPM, so as to include one weekend.

4. Assuming close to 30 entries and 3 Stage I contests, the final ten will include the top two in each contest and then the four others which got the highest vote totals, regardless of the particular Stage I contest they appeared in. The intent here is to try to recognize the fact that several popular images might appear in the same contest while another has only a couple of real crowd-pleasers.

This is just a proposal at this stage, so any suggestions are appreciated.

2. This is a test...
I'm going to post my picture here to see if it's the right size, and then I'm going to immediately delete it. No peeking...

Perfect. Not too big, not too small -- just right. Thanks, ConsAreLiars, for the tips on dimensions.

So I'm looking forward to the challenge. And thanks for taking control of this. You're doing a hell of a job.

4. It will be interesting to see what people come up with.
I thought of one of mine and considered posting it as a teaser for the contest, but decided I'd rather see what people come up with without possibly influencing those choices. And it is still somewhere wherever lost and missing slides go. The openness of the contest theme and the delay in starting should encourage some original ideas.

Glad you think I'm starting off OK. Just following DSI's lead as best I can, since that it the first contest I watched.

5. do entries get submitted by posting pics here?
And well we see some of the entries to find out what light and shadows pics look like? Laugh all you want, I'm new. I don't know.

6. I'll start an "entries" thread on Sunday
"Light and Shadows" can mean whatever it suggests to you. In the past it has taken a week or longer to get 30 pics, so you'll have a chance to see some how it is interpreted by some of the early entries well before the contest close.

It is a common theme in contests, and the sorts of images submitted often include shadow outlines on a background that somehow amplifies the meaning of the shadow, light shafts illuminating some subject, dark vs. light areas in a scene of some sort. Rembrandt. Good vs. evil, light vs. heavy, anything you want to make of it.

7. I'm clueless

Was planning on a walk-a-bout Sunday in the Mountains to search for some wildflowers. Might do it anyway.... cleanse the mind and recharge a 'on-low-charge' spirit. :) Who knows. Maybe I'll come across one of those light and shadows things.

BTW: I really like the 'bonus 4' idea as well as the 'first in - first out' idea for submissions going into the contest.

All in favor of having ConsAreLiars become the permanent contest host raise their hand!! (jus kiddin' C-A-L... no one should have to deal with this bunch on a regular basis).

Now.. Ideas. Ideas.

Edit? My hands have been taken over by the spirit of "Can't Type Shit".

8. to edit, sort of, "if the contest yields less than 30..."
"they will be divided into approximately equal groups for the next stage."

9. I would regard this as a sample entry if it were eligible (in my view).
Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:38 AM by TahitiNut
I don't consider this eligible since it's 36 years old and PhotoShopped (to add a 'clay' effect), but I think it otherwise might be one example -- using indirect flash -- of the theme. Concur?

10. I agree, it is a bit beyond "photography," but it is one example
of what could be entered. Light and shadow define the image, literally and in what it says. The category is very broad.

Troubling image, very effective art.

11. Dear me!
Are you posting that handsome photo again? It's haunting, yes, but... a man in uniform? Hubba, hubba!

:silly:

13. Feet of clay ... spread all the way to the head.
 (I sometimes wish I could counsel that 36-years-younger version of me.)
