Edited on Sat May-10-08 01:42 PM by mth44sc

I'll just add on edit that it was indeed an "interesting" experience...

1. Thanks for sharing them
Nice job, too. The guy in the bow tie is an instant classic.

Was it hard to 'relate'?

2. I think they lost me
when they did the pledge to the Confederate Flag...

I salute the Conederate Flag with affection, reverence and undying rememberance to the cause for which it stands.

This was done with an arm extended and a palm upturned and all the while about a half dozen of the guys there were watching to see that - in fact - I wasn't one of them...

Other than that - is was a unique experience that I most likely won't repeat - but don't regret having done this once.

Oh and after it was over this woman came up to my wife and asked her where she was from. Now I'm smart enough to just tell folk what area I live in NOW. My lovely wife - on the other hand - answered proudly "Ohio"...

3. Nice pictures
I do like the guy on bended knee and can almost relate to reverence for lost soldiers on any side of a fight. What's with the little cannon?

4. Thanks
That guy came up to me after the program and asked me to take that picture. He posed like that for about two minutes.

The cannon blast (two blasts actually) was the show closer...

5. There is something a little weird ...
about grown men dressing up as soldiers from a war that ended more than 140 years ago.

But I would have also jumped at the chance to photograph it.

6. read a book a few years back
called Confederates in the Attic Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horwitz

It pretty much explains this rather remarkable behavior.

I think, culturally for me, the difference is that I was raised to pay my respects to those who lost their lives on both sides of the conflict. Down here they have Confederate Memorial Day because they do not want to honor Memorial Day which also pays tribute to the Yankee soldiers.

The wounds remain kinda deep for some...

8. Great pictures!
I love the woman with the parasol sporting a pistol on her belt. A true Southern lady, but please don't mess with her. ;)
