I should have never went on my Flower Safari
Prior to yesterday I had about 70-80 flower snapshots and had all but picked my contest entry. So what does Mr. Idiot do? He goes out yesterday and takes over 300 more flower snapshots. Mr. Idiot even went to a Rose and Iris Exhibit/Contest. Below are three examples I more or less just randomly picked. Now Mr. Idiot is completely and totally confused. Mr. Idiot doesn't have any idea what to submit.

Will any of this kind of stuff have Lounge Appeal? Or should I go with a wide shot a large lush garden? Or should I go with a shot of a funky garden? Or should I just take a snaphot of fake flowers to be completely different and cynical? Too.Much.Brain.Damage.

Oh, and don't even think about asking me what kind of flowers these are. If that's a requirement for this contest then I'll just sit this one out. :D

1. What kind of flowers are those?
go with what turns you on. If you like it, that is what matters.

I like the middle one. I like rhythm.

2. Hmmmm.......
"what kind of flowers are those?" That could be a problem. If people don't recognize the flower it could diminish the "contest value". What kind? I have no idea.

You're right.. I'm just going to go with what I like and leave it at that. Thanks.

to be my problem.

11. Word
But is it a "problem" or a "gift"?
:silly:

I hope you and others go with the B&W photographs. I've tried to do some, but they all came out very crappy.

14. With Black and White you have to see things differently.
It is form, light, shadow, texture. You cannot rely on color to help tell the story.

Color is power chords, black and white is finger picking.

5. Thanks
I can now definitely say that I'm done with flowers. I've fulfilled my flower obligation.

This is the kind of stuff I like, but I know it would have very little contest appeal. I took a few different snapshots of this. If the theme is ever Funky Gardens I'm ready. :P

that is really beautiful.

Just look at my pityful tries to take flower shots.

Edit: you already did and were so kind to like some of them :)

9. Your photographs are not pitiful
You have some good contest entries there. The one thing I've noticed from all the photographs that people have been sharing... is that there are no bad flower photographs. IMO. It's all good.

It's nice to know that I'll have a least one vote if I go with Funky Garden. Thanks.

17. Thanks. I kinda' liked it too
The pink is washed out/over exposed, but I was more interested in the "candy" and the "wrapper". I tried blocking the sunlight with my body... the pink came out better and I reduced the shadows but I lost the detail of the main subject....the "candy".

You know flowers? Have any idea what the first one is? I loved the blood red color. Thought it was fairly unique. Different.

21. I know some flowers.
I recognize the poppy because I found a "volunteer" poppy in my garden when I was about 10. I was so fascinated by it I kept it going for years (and spread it to neighbors, as well) by shaking the poppy seeds from the seed pod into flower gardens. (The slits in the top of the center pod open up as it ages so you can shake them out.) The commercial poppies I found later on were much brighter in color, but also much more boring since they tended to have only one layer of petals.

Here's a link to an identification site: http://www.cambridge2000.com/gallery/html/P6037022.html

(I like your picture better)

I've identified most of the flowers I've taken using the internet and time of bloom, geographical location, color, unique characteristics, etc. I did a quick search for the first picture, but didn't find it. Geographical location (and time of year it blooms naturally if you encountered it in a non-native environment). The petals look iris-like, but the center part doesn't.

15. I know what you mean...
I had narrowed down a long list of possible selections to a mere forty-two (no Douglas Adams humor, please), and had even set up a separate web page to gather suggestions. I had cut that number down to five or six final contenders, when I spot a stand of day-lilies in a Seattle park, just across the street from a business to which I had to deliver something. I had about ten extra minutes on the parking meter. The result?

Numbers 43...

...and 44. :eyes:

Now I have to decide if either of these might be a better entry than any of the ones I put up for public comment last weekend...

16. I LIKE both of those
You really have the proper techique down for flower photography. Most of my crap is very 'harsh'. When I recover from my flower hangover I'll probably try it again... shoot in the 'proper light' and stuff.

Nice. (the second one is my fave)

Decisions, decisions........

As to how they compare to the others, well, that's why I rarely vote. But I like the way the B/W-ish background echoes the bright color flower. Nice work.

so I'm still obsessing on flowers. Here's a lucky shot at the Arnold Arboretum the other day:

I've been screwing up everything with the lighter colors, but you did a great job of getting the right exposure.

23. So, I send a link to friends and family...........
Trying to simulate the "Lounge" to see what appeals to a variety of people. My results? So far I've gotten 10 responses back and everyone has picked something different (I had about 20+ of my flower snapshots to pick from). :( I mean, what are the odds of 10 people all picking different snapshots?

I think it's time to break out the dartboard and put on a blindfold.
