At the end of last summer, we had a concrete driveway poured in front of our house (four cars wide since we're a duplex) where formerly there was pea gravel and dirt, which created some very nice little spaces on the side, too small for lawn but perfect for flowers. I started these from seeds inside under lights and with our very late spring I was afraid that they wouldn't bloom, but, voila, here they are giving us at least a couple of weeks of pleasure before the frost strikes. Except for the nasturtiums, this was from a "meadow mix" which was supposed to contain perennials and self-seeding annuals, so hopefully, many of these will come back next year. I'm a big fan of the poppies -- we had red ones, salmon-colored, white with a touch of pink, and California poppies.

The petunias were from store-bought starts, but next year I'm going to start early and plant them from seed. I bought seeds this year but didn't realize how long it took to get them to planting size.
