Cannon Beach (IF YOU HAVE DIAL-UP, DON'T EVEN BOTHER...)
We spent a few days on the Oregon coast back around the time of the Democratic convention. While we were in the town of Seaside, I made a few photo trips to Cannon (not "Canon," although you'd be hard-pressed to tell from the photographers there ;-) ) Beach

My first goal was to capture sunrise from the iconic (translation: every photographer in the Northwest has a shot from here) viewpoint at Ecola State Park.

As you can see, I got there well before dawn.

]

Seal Rock and some of the sea-stacks, with an unknown lighthouse or two on the horizon.

When morning came, it was a mixed bag: nice glow to the east, but too many clouds to get a quintessential sunrise shot.

Seal Rock.

Trying out the wide-angle lens.

Later in the afternoon, I returned to the beach itself, hoping to capture sunset.

Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in, leaving only a hint of pink on the horizon.

Fortunately, after a rainy morning, the second day was much better.

(Notice the bird atop the right sea-stack.)

And I got the sunset I'd been hoping for.

The next morning, it was time for another 5:00 A.M. alarm for one more try at Ecola. Unfortunately, it was even foggier and more overcast than the first time. But, if I couldn't get the sunrise shot I'd planned, at least the weather was moody enough for a nice "impressionistic" image.

No Water Falling Over Things this time...but at least water doing practically everything else.

1. These are stunning!
My parents, brother and I had our very first vacation ever at Cannon Beach, way back in the fifties!

These pics brought back some wonderful memories...

Really, you do breath-taking work...

Thanks for sharing!

2. That's such a beautiful spot.
We've been by there many times but haven't been fortunate enough to stick around for the whole day. These are absolutely gorgeous photos.

3. Just beautiful, broken record....
How far away is this from Crater Lake? My husband wants to dive the lake next year, and I would love to see the coast. :hi:

8. Crater Lake and the Oregon Coast...
The Cannon Beach area is actually on the coast east-northeast of Portland, and so would be a long drive from Crater Lake.

However...if you drive from Crater Lake toward the coast (about 75-100 miles, it would appear) toward Coos Bay, you'll find yourself in a great area for photography. Directly north along the coast will be the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area, which should offer some foregrounds straight out of the desert southwest with coastal backgrounds. South of Coos Bay, you'll find the town of Bandon and its beach, which is said to rival Cannon Beach as a photographic hot-spot. In fact, the author of the Photograph America newsletter claims that the most photogenic part of the Oregon coast is, in fact, from Bandon down to the California border, so you'd be in exactly the right area. (I've never been there myself, so I'll take it on his authority.)

10. These are great!
I actually like the last one the best, but they're all excellent. That place is a dream for photographers.

One of my contacts on Flickr has taken many many photos of this beach. You can check out his photos here:

I look at Oregon Coast pics on a very regular basis - yours are among the cream of the crop, which I'm sure you know. Hope you had a wonderful time!

14. Gorgeous
I tried to take sunrise and pre-dawn pictures in Sweden too but compared to use I better hide them.

Did you use a special filter?

so much more interesting than your standard photo from there. Though have to admit the sunsets are beautiful too. I think the last one is my fav though. The more you look at it the more you see and love the mood.
