Texas State Capitol (dial up warning)
The state capitol building is a terrific architectural structure. Now, if we can just get more and better Democrats into the Governor's mansion, state house and senate, and Congress, we'd be fine.

1. "Republic of Texas"...
So, according to the capitol building, Texas is still a sovereign nation?

2. Shoot, yes.................
.......and its capitol is Crawford-on-the-Brazos.

Down here, lots of folks discuss ancestry in terms of "How many generations?" your family's Texas roots go, and their interest in the world stops at the Rio Grande and the Red River.

And you wonder how W. ever got elected governor?

You can see the US seal there, too. But the Republic seal is in the middle, the most important spot, I guess.

The building was beautifully restored about 10 years ago. Most of the offices housed inside were moved a 3 story underground complex built directly north. You'd never know it was there, just driving by.

BTW, I live in downtown Austin, only about a mile from this building. Here's my favorite photo, taken with my old Olympus C7070:

3. Where is Molly Ivins when we need her?
Texas politics without her is - well - just a screwed up but without all the fun...
