My New Year's Resolution...
...is to stop describing photos as "stunning" (unless they literally jump up and hit me between the eyes, rendering me unconscious).

Seriously, it's a cheap phrase. If I like something, I need to communicate more clearly just what it is I like about it. "Stunning" isn't a helpful critique. And, looking back, I've been using it far too often.

Anyone else want to join me on this? (I'm not saying anyone else has overused the term, just that I think it might be time for a moratorium.)

4. You'll know...
...when you get the personal injury attorneys serving you with papers on behalf of all the viewers who have been stunned by your photos, and are now demanding compensatory and punitive damages.

7. I think if someone
described on of my photos as pulchritudinous I'd be hurt. I would not believe it was positive. I often get thse advanced SAT vocabulary words wrong.

8. It doesn't sound very complimentary does it?

More like an insult. I double checked the meaning myself.

10. Oh, But It's Such a Good Word
Edited on Fri Jan-02-09 12:35 PM by Crisco
When this was first unveiled:

A local newscaster described it as "the Stunning $250000 sculpture." I suspected he didn't mean it as a compliment, because of the way he said it. (I quite like it, though.)

11. The problem is that there are plenty of pics here that actually are stunning.
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 07:11 PM by superconnected
Spectacular, gorgeous, fantastic, beautiful, awing, breathtaking and splendid also keep being words that I find perfectly applicable to what I'm seeing here.

But, I will resolute to find more words to describe stunningly-beautiful-breathtaking-photos. I'm sure majestic, exquisite, glorious, splendid, sublime, radiant, superb, flawless, perfect, ravishing and eye-catching, ah heck exquisite-glorious-eye-candy, will work just as well. I resolute to try to describe what I see that I like instead of my typical dumb-struck reaction that leaves me gasping the word "stunning" when I see an incredible photo.
