One of the oddest things I saw in Nome...
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 04:19 PM by Blue_In_AK
I may not post this in my Nome gallery because it's so blown out, but this is probably the most unusual thing I saw in Nome. A pet caribou?

(I discovered after I had taken quite a few shots this particular day, that I had accidentally bumped my exposure up a few notches and didn't notice because it was so bright out.)

I don't know - maybe, on second thought, I could crop out some more of that glaring sky and still use this picture. This is not something you see every day.

1. Oh Yeah, I would do the crop and if you could increase the shadow a bit for
contrast. This is awesome, and I bet I don't even know the half of if.
WOW

2. I see a caption something like
"In other parts of the world, DOGS ride in the beds of pickups." When I saw this, I almost didn't believe my eyes and had to shoot quickly because the truck was moving down the road.

Yes, I'm sure there's a story here.

3. There is a story
I've actually seen this before if I'm not mistaken. Isn't Nome the area where a lot of the Gold was found. If its the same guy - they did a bit on him on a show called Gold Fever or Gold Prospecting. I don't remember which one. Both are on the Outdoor Channel. I belive (if this is the same one) he found it injured when it was young and its been with him ever since.

4. Oh, how very cool!

I'll bet that's it, and how lucky I was to catch them driving around town. :)

Yes, Nome is the area with the gold. Gold was discovered on the beach there in 1899, and at one time the town had a population of approximately 20,000 people, including Wyatt Earp who opened up a saloon on front street called The Dexter. At this time, the population is about 3,500.

6. I like this shot as it is: blown out.
Gives an even more surreal feel to the scene. It's almost glowing with mysticism. O8)

Great shot, Blue!

I did crop it down a little for the gallery, but there wasn't much I could do about the color. I was so caught by surprise by the sight that I was totally unprepared to shoot, and the truck was moving, turning a corner, in fact. It came up behind me and turned left right in front of me. I was like WHAT???!!

8. That is strange
I've heard of people riding in sleds pulled by reindeer, but caribou being ferried around by pickup? Global warming really has messed things up.

I like this picture btw, even if it is blown out. It highlights the detail of the head and antlers and there's nothing to distract one from the realization that, yep, that really is the most pampered caribou in Nome.
