A few from the trail
The trail up Flattop is pretty steep, so much so that in many places they've made steps, a Godsend. That's Anchorage far below.

A little higher up

This is as far as I made it. The sign said the last leg was difficult, and it wasn't lying. From here on up to the top, it was just these jagged rocks, and I valued my camera gear (and myself) too much to risk it. Still a pretty nice view.

1. nice hike!
At least it doesn't look too far above sea level. Or am I wrong, is that above the tree line? The last time I went on a mountain with steps like that it was Rainier, probably starting at six or seven thousand feet or so, after being in Seattle at sea level. I had to quit, too, not because of the roughness, but I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest!

Just how much camera gear do you take on a hike like that? I think I would be tempted to rely on a pocket camera. I guess I am into comfort more than photography, LOL.

3. I believe the top of Flatttop is about 3500 feet or so,

and I almost got there. According to Wikipedia, the elevation gain is 1200 feet from the parking lot to the top. That's 1200 feet over a mile and a half trail, so it's a pretty good climb. It is above tree line here because we're so far to the north.

I had my 5D with the 17-40 lens on and was carrying the 70-200 and my Gorillapod with a ball head on it on my back in a little backpack. It wasn't too heavy, but the drops were pretty sheer at some points, so it made me a little nervous. I don't own a pocket camera. It might be a good investment. :)

Here's a picture of Flattop in the winter from Wiki

2. Great shots - they tell the story. I'm glad you were careful.
I crashed on a hike at "the Arches" and, trying to protect my camera from doing the same hurt my foot A LOT.
Camera is good though.
