food porn from Peru
Some really ancient foods from Peru. The odd ones are varieties of potatoes. This all happened today quite spontaneously when I visited a restaurant that specialized in pre-Colombian medicinal foods.

1. Thanks!
I'm happy to know that there is produce left that is untouched by Monsanto. Anyway, this gets me into the mood to go to the Farmer's Market today, even if there isn't anything quite so beautiful there.

4. A farmer family I know grows blue, red, and fingerling potatoes, and plan
on growing more varieties.

I just bought some fingerlings today. One was shaped like a heart. I took a photo before I put it in the roasting pan.

The blue were good, but not special in anything other than color.

The fingerlings were very tasty.

2. Were those coca leaves?
I have several Peruvian friends that enjoy the drink that is made from those leaves.

3. Those are
Drunk as a tea to help with altitude adjustment and used as a flour in breads, cookies, and other foods. Highly nutritious and a main way that people in the mountains survive. There's little to no high from the leaves as well. La oja de coca no es droga.

5. Oh yes, I knew it wasn't a drug
but a medicinal supplement. I didn't realize they were used in so much other food.
