Three Mile Island is getting two new steam generators. Each one weighs about 500 tons and is carried by a special trailer. Top speed is 3 miles per hour. They both landed in Port Deposit at Tome's Landing last week and should arrive at TMI on September 30th. Today it headed toward PA and came with in two miles of my house so I went to watch.
Went to park up on a grassy corner above the traffic circle. This guy had to avoid a couple kids running around and found a hole in the ground. He took it pretty well and later someone used their truck to pull him out. Better him than me cause I would not of stayed so calm and laid back about it.
Have to get the wires out of the way. Bet the Ravens fans were happy they didn't decided to take down the cable. Just high enough.
In my imagination they are talking about their overtime and how easy it has been so far. Verizon on the left and Delmarva Power on the right. Armstrong had to go take down wires about a half mile down the road.
A couple hours late but finally the first one arrives. They had a hydraulic leak in one of the suspension systems.
No matter how fancy the equipment or where it is from (France for these guys) seems it still needs one of the two main shop tools. In this case WD 40. Then again there is probably duct tape somewhere in all the gear. Close up of some of the 128 tires with independent suspension.
It is pretty big.
Got the whole thing in one shot, barely. Also cleared the lines and didn't tip over.
You just never know what you will see on the road. In between generators they let some traffic go through. An Amphicar(?). It seemed to excite most of the older males there including the SO.
Second one, looks just like the first one.
If you were with the local paper you got to get a lot closer.
They were giving out these t-shirts. I want one.
Video from the local newspaper if you are interested.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD_mef-3ZvsIt is parked just at the state line tonight and will head north on Rt. 1 tomorrow to Nottingham. There it will get on Rt. 272 and head toward Willow Street, PA. I might try finding out some other spots and see if they have a good place to watch it and get more photos. Not sure any where else will be as easy as Rt. 273 and Rt 276 were though.
