I have a question about digital SLRs...

I've got a Nikon D50, which I am very happy with. I've had it since 2005.

Every now and then, it will refuse to take a picture, for no apparent reason. I took it into the Nikon people locally, and they found nothing wrong with it.

What I've found that works is to rapidly turn off the camera, and then back on. It's a nuisance, but it works.

My question is: What is the typical life of a digital SLR?

This one is just over 4 years old. Is this typical?

I'm thinking, next year, of investing in a new Nikon.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

1. My Canon does that occaisionally...

maybe twice since I got it in April. It gives me an error message on the screen. Turning it off and then back on is the remedy. Maybe the internal programming gets its knickers in a twist.

I wouldn't worry too much about wearing your camera out. Most people outgrow their (quality brand) digital cameras before they shoot them out.

Like any electronic appliance, the first fix is reboot, which seems to fix your problem.

The sensors seem to be good for tens of thousands of shots, and with the moving parts, well, depends on how gently (or roughly) the camera is used.

I've had a Nikon D60 a little over a year and already want a D90. I can always sell the old body on craigslist and reuse the lenses, etc...!
