3. Hey Jeff... what do you think...

Straight conversion to BW via SilverEFX no other changes. It is supposed to be a fall photo but I'll be damned if it doesn't actually look better in BW.

6. Very nice...
...but I think you're drastically over-sharpening all your images, as there seems to be a "halo" around each of the small branches, pavement textures, etc. I first thought they might be JPEG compression artifacts, but your file sizes would indicate that you weren't applying a drastic amount of compression. Unless, of course, that's a deliberately chosen look -- in which case, fine!

7. When I reduce them
to a size that isn't too big to post here - photos with a lot of detail like branches, etc get that salt and pepper artifacting. I try to reduce that in the software and sometimes what you mentioned is the result. The full 10mp image doesn't look like that at all but that would be way too big to post. The salt and pepper filter softens them a little too much so I guess using unsharp mask also creates a problem.

9. I assumed this was being introduced by the "grain reproduction engine"
of the filter. Don't know to what degree that's controllable or what the before/after effect of the unsharp mask is.

The grain in your photo of the man in the hat looked much more subtle.

10. You might be right about the grain effect
it probably gets that salt and pepper artifacting when you reduce the image in size. It seems to happen with fine details- stuff like leaves and branches. If you over correct the image starts to look like a watercolor or poster. Like I said if you leave the image at the original size it looks just fine when you work on a nature photo. I may have to experiment with the sequence I use to create black and white images of nature scenes.

11. Just took a GOOD look...

oh yeah I see what you mean. That is most likely the result of the reduction in size. It might work better if I reduced the size FIRST and then converted to black and white and maybe try some other tweeking. Its also in the color shots as well - most likely a combo of size reduction and over sharpening.

8. Now the whole composition seems more pulled together to me.
Fine work.

2. I love Central Park
I was there yesterday and did the touristy rowboat ride and took tons of pics. We just don't get colors like this where I live

I miss seasons.

5. You live in the Bay Area, and you complain about seasons???

Try moving from Vermont to the San Fernando Valley, and spending the next three years of your life staring at brown grass, brown trees, and brown air. At least, up there in NorCal, you can head to Yosemite, Sequoia, or Tahoe!
